- ➤ mediaBrew Communications' 'Christmas Is For Veterans' gift drive returns for its 23rd year to collect presents for veterans living at Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti in Marquette. Volunteers can drop off items at Super One Foods in Marquette, Park Chiropractic in Marquette & the office at 3060 US 41 West in Marquette Township through December 17th. Sunny 101.9
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Escanaba’s Players de Noc will perform two holiday plays for a double feature at the Bay College Besse Theater—The Great Christmas Cookie Bake-Off and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever will be staged with evening shows on December 5, 6, 11, and 13 at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee on December 7 at 1:30 p.m. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Downtown Marquette’s historic lower harbor ore dock will light up for its annual laser show, a free family event best viewed from Mattson Lower Harbor Park. The show will run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. until December 27 and will feature new festive designs each week created by Fresh Coast Light Lab. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU Center for Native American Studies staged a flash mob at the Hedgcock Building as the final event for Native American Heritage Month—students, staff, and onlookers joined a Round Dance with traditional native songs to celebrate together. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marquette will host a free holiday concert called 'Caroling, Caroling Now We Go!' on November 30th at 3 p.m. to honor the Burt family legacy and mark the church’s upcoming 150-year celebration on Christmas Eve; the event will feature ensembles, solos and a string group with donations supporting the restoration project (Bates composed the original carols in the 1920s and his tunes were passed on by his son and great-granddaughter). EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ After years of planning and months of construction, the Shiras Planetarium at Marquette Senior High School completed a major renovation with new Zeiss projection technology, upgraded seating, improved lighting and a new sound system. The planetarium now invites the community to shape its future through training, content creation and educational programs and has launched the Adopt a Shiras Star fundraising campaign to cover the remaining balance of $235,000. - ➤ Marquette Senior High School hosted its third Taste from Home event last Thursday where students and staff shared dishes from Ukraine, the Philippines, Spain, and Brazil—bringing a variety of cultures together. MSHS students, including junior Mariia Pavlenko, encouraged everyone to join next year to continue sharing their family traditions. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Marquette’s U.P. Wellness Task Force and Marquette-Alger RESA created an online resource hub to help families find local support options during the holiday season— the site lists links to SNAP benefits, food distributions, and toy drives. WZMQ 19
- ➤ On October 27, the West End Health Foundation gave Camp UPeninsulin a $10,000 grant through matched donations from the Swim Teal Lake Benefit + the funds support children with diabetes. The money will help the camp get the resources it needs for diabetes care + run its summer camp programs. WZMQ 19

- ➤ Marquette local Diana Peterson, 88, bagged a 5-point buck on opening day of firearm deer season today while hunting from a blind on public lands in Republic — her son tracked the wounded animal after it was shot in the left shoulder. She has hunted since age 15 and said her success today highlights a long career in the sport. The Mining Journal

- ➤ The NMU Wildcats men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Cedarville in the NCAA Tournament opener on Thursday after Cedarville scored with 3:59 remaining in regulation. Head coach Alex Fatovic said his team fought through injuries and a player’s food poisoning as they pushed hard throughout the match. WZMQ 19
- ➤ The No. 15 NMU women’s basketball team beat St. Cloud State 77—69 in overtime in their home opener yesterday as Jacy Weisbrod led with 22 points to keep the Wildcats unbeaten at 6—0. NMU shot 38.6% from the field and will face the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs tomorrow at Vandamant Arena at 5:30 p.m. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU and Michigan Tech women's basketball teams won their overtime games on November 20th—each securing a close win that decided the matchups. WZMQ 19
