COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette County is seeking volunteers to drive seniors to appointments as the RSVP program has only three drivers after completing 130 rides last year. Volunteers must be 55 or older, have a valid license and vehicle, pass a background check, and will be reimbursed 70 cents per mile.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Superior Watershed Partnership is the only organization in the U.P. that distributes Michigan Energy Assistance Program funds as utility bills rise with winter coming, and funding has increased from about $2.5 million to $5 million while eligibility now includes households at about 200% of the poverty line—neighbors are urged to share this info if they need help.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • After a month of renovations, the Marquette Salvation Army store reopened Thursday with a refurbished floor, new dressing rooms and other updates. Bill Brutto, the head administrator, said many shoppers celebrated the reopening and that the store now operates Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Fox Marquette hosted its annual Trunk-or-Treat event last Thursday—families walked through the showroom to pick candy from decorated car trunks and see costumed characters. The event also kicked off its Toys for Tots season, and community members were invited to drop off new, unopened toys during business hours.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Bay College and Lake Superior State University BPA students finished their Warm Coats for Warm Hearts campaign after collecting 207 items for Delta County from Oct. 6 to 20 — they placed donation boxes at local businesses and sorted donations on Oct. 21 before giving winter gear away on Oct. 22.  The Mining Journal
  • A final vinyl record show and sale will take place this Saturday (from noon until close) at Blackrocks Brewery at 424 N. 3rd Street in Marquette, offering classic and new vinyl records, CDs and cassettes. Co-organizer Jon Teichman said the one-day event is the last of 2025 and gives locals a chance to update their holiday playlists.  Sunny 101.9

  • Students gathered in Jamrich Hall on Oct. 27 to learn how to register for classes for next semester. Senior Success Advisors Conor Mccoy and Susan Robison explained that students should check for holds and use the Registrar’s course list PDF—blank scheduling sheets were given to help draft schedules.  The North Wind

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan State Police’s fifth annual Winter Coat Drive — underway through Nov. 27 — is calling for new and gently used coats and gloves to help keep local families warm this winter. Residents can drop off donations during business hours Monday through Friday at posts in Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that Michigan will provide $4.5M to the Food Bank Council of Michigan to help feed families when SNAP benefits pause on November 1. The funds will be used in all counties — they will deliver food to those who cannot drive.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • With the government shutdown affecting SNAP benefits starting November 1, NMU & MTU food pantries have seen an increase in students and staff needing food assistance. NMU's pantry in Gries Hall now offers fresh and non-perishable items while MTU's FAN program provides packaged meals and accepts donations to support those in need.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Michigan Tech guard Marcus Tomashek was named the GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year for the upcoming men's basketball season, earning the honor for a second year in a row—he scored 720 points last season, ranking among the program's top marks. The Huskies will open their season on Nov. 1 in Florida against Dallas Baptist and play Lenoir-Rhyne on Nov. 2.  WZMQ 19
  • Mya Hemmer from Ishpeming M12 was named Player of the Year at the Mid Peninsula Conference Volleyball — Krista Squiers from Negaunee was honored as Coach of the Year.  WZMQ 19
