COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry in Ishpeming is calling for donations after its usual support from Feeding America decreased this year. The pantry, serving over 300 households, accepts canned and boxed goods, juices, snacks, paper towels and other items during its Monday 10:00 a.m.—noon and Wednesday 1:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m. hours.  WZMQ 19
  • First Presbyterian Church in Marquette is preparing its annual Fall Bazaar on Front Street this Saturday (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) where vendors will offer handmade crafts, treats and a luncheon; proceeds will fund restoring the church organ.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Able Medical Devices opened its new 30,000 square foot factory at 2980 M-553 in Marquette when the Lake Superior Community Partnership held a ribbon cutting ceremony. The facility will boost operations, support company growth, and create local jobs.  The Mining Journal
  • Cleveland-Cliffs said it might pursue rare-earth mineral mining at two sites—one in the UP and one in Minnesota—after geological surveys showed key indicators. The company said the move could support American manufacturing independence as the nation works to reduce reliance on foreign minerals.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Lake Superior Community Partnership will host the second annual Marquette County Small Business Celebration on November 6 at the Mather in Ishpeming to honor local small businesses and designate a Small Business Champion. The event has a classic movie Anatomy of a Murder theme—attendees are encouraged to dress in 50s style.  Sunny 101.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • NMU students and community members attended a traditional dinner celebration on Sunday—part of the second Diwali Festival of Lights co-sponsored by the Lydia Olson Library and NMU English Department. The five-day festival highlights Hindu culture and will culminate with Bhai Dooj.  WZMQ 19
  • Local piano teacher William E. Weber’s composition, The Lake Superior Suite, will be performed in full for the first time in Marquette at free community concerts. NMU faculty pianist Theresa Camilli will perform the piece with Weber’s never-before-seen paintings, with concerts scheduled for (4 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Federated Women’s Clubhouse, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28 at NMU’s Reynolds Recital Hall, and 6 p.m. Nov. 6 at St Paul’s Episcopal Church) and proceeds from art sales supporting NMU music scholarships (this sale benefits student musicians).  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz and a team are touring the U.P. today to build stronger partnerships with local communities, healthcare systems, and schools — with stops in Iron Mountain, Escanaba, and Marquette to promote a program that recruits and trains students for rural practice. The tour emphasizes MSU’s commitment to supporting community-based medical education and local healthcare advances.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Police officers across Michigan are increasing patrols in a campaign called Operation Safe Stop to catch drivers who illegally pass school buses during National School Bus Safety Week—local agencies plan to work with school districts to educate motorists and prevent dangerous crashes.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Meditate Marquette offers free drop-in meditation sessions with virtual caregiver classes on the second and fourth Monday from 6:30-7:30 p.m., a Tuesday session happening today at the Peter White Public Library from 6-7 p.m., a Friday class from noon-1 p.m., and a Mindful Living Series on the first Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m.—more details are available on their website.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Noah Dobert rushed for 243 yards and scored three touchdowns in Northern Michigan’s 42-21 win over Roosevelt+ he broke the team’s single-game rushing record and earned the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honor. The Wildcats will play Michigan Tech in the Miner’s Cup rivalry at 12 p.m. on October 25 inside the Superior Dome.  WZMQ 19
  • Peter Frank became the youngest to complete the Great Loop after finishing a nearly 5,000-mile solo canoe trip that began on June 27, covering 15 months on the water—he is the third ever to paddle up the Mississippi—and he hopes his record will inspire others.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Saturday at Pictured Rocks Golf Course, Marquette’s Sentinels captured their seventh straight Division 1 title as Sault Ste. Marie’s Gabe Litzner won his fourth Upper Peninsula Finals championship—while in Division 2, Jeffers took the title and Munising finished third in an eight-team field.  The Mining Journal
  • NMU hockey lost to Colorado College Saturday night at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats took 31 shots and saw first career goals by Mathew Ward and Tobias Pitka while falling to zero wins and six losses as Colorado College reached five wins and one loss—marking a strong performance for the Tigers.  WZMQ 19
