COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette Mountain will hold its second annual Cheese Roll on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., where runners chase a wheel of cheese to win a Rutland Red Leicester cheese wheel—adding fun to the Fall Fest event that offers live music, lift rides and games for all ages.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Food Co-op is celebrating National Co-op Month by offering weekly raffles & deep discounts for part owner sign-ups, highlighting its role in providing profit-sharing and essential services to the community through October.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • NMU College of Business held a dinner last night in Marquette to show students how to dress well and act properly in business, and experts from Young’s menswear plus local leaders shared tips on proper etiquette and conduct during business meals. The Dean’s Advisory Council organized the event to connect classroom lessons with real-world practices.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • Saturday, the annual Zombie Pub Crawl hosted by Nerds of Marquette will fill downtown with Halloween creatures, starting with check-in at Kognisjon Bryggeri at 4 p.m. — the crawl will visit Superior Culture, Blossom Bird Bubble Tea and Ore Dock Brewing Company before the Horrorball runs from 7 to 10 p.m. at Marquette Commons.  The Mining Journal
  • Today until October 11, the Marquette Maritime Museum runs ghost tours that leave every 10 minutes from the museum parking lot and travel around Lighthouse Park to the historic lighthouse built in 1866 — the tours feature characters from Marquette’s maritime past and benefit the museum and NMU Food Bank. The ghost tours offer a kid-friendly session from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and sessions for ages 12 and over from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday evening, Negaunee residents learned how to create a family tree at the Negaunee Public Library when volunteers from the Marquette County Genealogical Society showed them where to find records like birth certificates and census documents.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Students were surprised to see a renovated Starbucks in John X. Jamrich hall this fall. NMU began the renovation in May — the project coincided with former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz's visit and a $1 million donation and follows a 10-year refresh rule in its Master Use Licensing Agreement.  The North Wind
  • The Northern Michigan University Presidential Search Advisory Committee is more than halfway through choosing a new leader as finalist Dr Christopher Olson visited campus to meet students, staff and faculty. The committee will hold its final candidate forum today— a crucial step in the search process — as NMU aims to enhance academic success.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the DNR asked hunters to report any wild pigs they see because these animals may carry Bovine TB that can put livestock, wildlife — and possibly people at risk. Reports show that wild pigs have hurt farms in northeastern Wisconsin — data that officials will use to track the disease’s spread.  WZMQ 19
  • The Marquette County Board approved a Brownfield Plan Tuesday for a new housing project on a vacant 5.3-acre lot at 170 County Rd. 492 in Marquette Township. Marquette Township will sell the property to Renovare Marquette Homes, LLC — which will build 48 units and receive reimbursement for eligible costs under the plan.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Jesse Nye of Mount Mfg had his proposal approved by the Marquette Township Planning Commission on Wednesday to relocate his scientific research facility to the former Ride North building on US-41—he said the new site is three times larger than the current facility and will support four to eight years of growth as the company plans to vacate its old property after remodeling.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Forsyth Forward is hosting its first Anderson Lake Backyard Ultra this weekend in Gwinn at Anderson Lake State Forest Park—runners will complete 4.2 mile loops in a 24-hour race that starts Saturday at 8 a.m. and ends Sunday at 8 a.m. with 60 slots available for a $75 fee.  Upper Michigan's Source
