COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Presque Isle Marina will open on Thursday after ice damage repairs delayed its original opening last week+ the repairs fixed broken brackets, displaced planks and anchors. The marina and Cinder Pond will be open through November 1.  WZMQ 19
  • U.P. Vietnam War veterans left Escanaba on Wednesday to fly to Washington, D.C. to visit memorials and honor their service. They returned Wednesday evening to a cheering crowd that welcomed them home.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bishop John Doerfler of Marquette released a statement on May 8 after Pope Leo XIV was appointed—he noted that the new pontiff is the first chosen from the U.S.—underscoring the historic nature of the decision.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Five buildings in Marquette, Negaunee, and Ishpeming have been selected to receive a $536,000 MEDC grant (50%) for facade improvements, with local owners adding private funds and work expected to begin in summer. The grant will help preserve historic properties and spark further downtown investment.  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday local beekeepers gathered at Stag Farms in Breitung Township to collect roughly 3 million honey bees from Hansen Honey—most being Italian honey bees along with Carniolan and Saskatraz varieties that will help revive fallen hives and boost pollination for gardens and crops.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.P. lawmakers passed two bills Wednesday that create cutouts in Michigan energy laws for 13 natural gas units in Marquette and Baraga counties — keeping them operational until 2050. The measure aims to help local utilities avoid billion-dollar replacement costs and keep electricity surcharges low — protecting businesses and families.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Superior Health Foundation announced its fall fundraising gala on May 8th when CEO Megan Murphy — joined by Trillium House Executive Director Melissa Cavill — discussed the event on the Mark and Walt Morning show. The gala will benefit Trillium House and Beacon House and offers local sponsorship options.  Sunny 101.9
  • On May 8th, Marquette-Alger RESA promoted positive mental health for kids and families during National Mental Health Awareness Month by sharing tips on healthy sleep, outdoor play and building youth resiliency during an interview on the Mark and Walt radio show.
