CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Marquette Regional History Center finished digitizing its largest item — a 13-ft long railroad map from 1855 measuring 104 sqft — after an attendee requested a copy; the digital map will be sent to Negaunee Historical Society and reproductions remain available onsite. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Dancing With Our Stars – Marquette County Style is returning with a reimagined variety show format called A Showcase of Stars, presented by U.P. Hospice Foundation and U.P. Home Health and Hospice, scheduled for Oct. 8. Local groups will perform high-energy dances and theatrical acts to support Hospice care. The Mining Journal

- ➤ Teacher Sarah Juday from Superior Hills Elementary in Marquette was named one of 10 Regional Teachers of the Year for 2026-27 by the Michigan Department of Education and will soon interview with statewide partners before one teacher is chosen as Michigan Teacher of the Year. - ➤ Bay College’s Allied Health department hosted its fifth annual Health Career and College Fair on Tuesday, where students met with 25 employers and area universities to learn about available jobs and summer externships (including OSF HealthCare, Bishop Noa Home, and Bay Cliff Health Camp). - ➤ NMU lacrosse defeated Northwood 20-4 in a dominant performance as Josie Lakosky scored nine points while 21 players contributed. The team will host McKendree tomorrow, Feb. 19 at 3:00 p.m. in the Superior Dome. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU women's cross-country ski team clinched the CCSA conference crown at Theodore Wirth Park in Minneapolis after several skiers (including Henriette Nilssen) finished in the top positions of the 10k Freestyle. The team will compete at the NCAA Central Regional Championships at Spirit Mountain in Duluth on Feb. 27. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU Alpine ski teams defended the USCSA Regional Championship today as the women swept the podium with Springer taking gold and Jaeger winning for the men + the team now prepares for the National Championship from March 9 to 14 at Whiteface Mountain. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Michigan Tech Nordic ski teams finished second at the CCSA Championships on Sunday at Theodore Wirth Park. Several Huskies earned top finishes in both classic and skate races and now build momentum for the NCAA Championships. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Junior attacker Josie Lakosky is named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring 8 goals + 3 assists in a 20-10 win over Calvin and 7 goals + 2 assists in a 20-4 victory over Northwood. The Wildcats will host McKendree Bearcats on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 3:00 p.m. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Ryan Anderson won the UP200 race on Sunday in Marquette in 46 hours, 9 minutes and 35 seconds, marking his 10th win. At Monday morning’s ceremony at the Holiday Inn, Erin Aili earned two sportsmanship awards and Quince Mountain received the Red Lantern Award — cash prizes and trophies. The Mining Journal
- ➤ NMU Wildcats set a new school record in the 4000m distance medley relay when Choponis (Truckey, Harper, and Szymanski) ran 11:44.49 at the GVSU Big Meet this past weekend. The team earned multiple top-five finishes and will compete at the Parkside Classic in Kenosha on Saturday, Feb. 21. WZMQ 19
