  • The Community Foundation of Marquette County is partnering with local agencies to support Room at The Inn’s emergency overflow shelter during December using donor funds from the Zacchaeus Fund (vital for safe temporary lodging).  The Mining Journal

  • Local businesses are bracing for a busy season of Christmas gift returns after the holidays — Downwind Sports Co-Owner Bill Thompson and Menards General Manager Daniel Staley noted that returns may continue in the coming weeks, advising shoppers to keep receipts and tags.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A welding class for beginners and intermediate students will start on Jan. 17 at NMU's Jacobetti Complex. The six-week course meets every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, teaching safety, equipment set-up, and welding techniques + providing hands-on practice.  The Mining Journal

  • Icicles formed by strong winds off Lake Superior created delicate designs at Presque Isle Park in Marquette (captured by local photographers), drawing attention from residents.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Michigan State University study finds that the Rx Kids program, which gives cash to families during pregnancy, increased voter turnout for young mothers in Flint during the 2024 election. The program has spread to Upper Peninsula communities (including Marquette), showing that better financial help can boost civic life.  WZMQ 19
  • In 1975, Marquette and Iron Mountain voters rejected a proposal for U.P. statehood that would have created a 'State of Superior.' The failed effort reflected regional economic concerns and cultural differences as mining declined and environmental laws tightened, underscoring the longstanding local quest for identity & autonomy.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • UP Health System—Marquette has introduced the Magseed® marker to help surgeons accurately locate and remove breast tumors during lumpectomy surgeries. The device offers a less invasive option than guidewire localization, improving patient comfort and outcomes.  The Mining Journal
  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said it opposes the delay of the hepatitis B birth dose and urged families & providers to follow proven immunization schedules to protect children from serious liver disease.  The Mining Journal
  • Monet Borione will assume the role of executive director at Bay Cliff Health Camp at the end of the year, replacing Clare Lutgen who led it since 2018. Borione said she is ready to support staff & ensure quality care for children.  Upper Michigan's Source

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Families enjoyed a relaxed Christmas break shredding the slopes at Mount Bohemia on Friday, with quiet runs + nearly empty slopes at the popular resort. The resort will host a New Year's Eve party on Dec. 31 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with live music until midnight.  Upper Michigan's Source
