- ➤ The Mining Journal is collecting toy donations for its annual Cheer Club to bring record gifts to children and teens in need; drop-offs are accepted at its office on 249 W. Washington St.+ from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Mining Journal
- ➤ On Dec. 13, MSP troopers drove their Blue Goose patrol car nearly 600 miles to deliver Christmas gifts to 2-year-old Vialah White at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital — she is receiving treatment for high-risk neuroblastoma. The Mining Journal
- ➤ On Giving Tuesday, Copper Shores Community Health Foundation distributed $1.175M to 60 local groups, including the Swedetown Trails Club (receiving $31,871 to update ski trails and renovate its chalet for ADA access) and the Third Coast Diving and Adaptive Recreation group (which got a $3,000 late boost). - ➤ The Peter White Public Library will host an hour-long session every Friday from Jan. 2 to Jan. 30 at the Heritage Room—local organizations will lead each event to help participants build meaningful connections. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Marquette City Fire Department offers holiday cooking safety tips to help prevent kitchen fires this week. Firefighter Richard Probst advises staying in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling, turning off burners if you step away, and cleaning surfaces to remove grease buildup. - ➤ Three Rotary clubs in Marquette County celebrated October’s Pumpkins Against Polio event by raising $1,638.03 & a 2-1 match from the Gates Foundation to bring the total to $4,924.03 for Rotary International’s effort to end polio globally. The Mining Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday morning, the Forsyth Snowmobile Club hosted a free safety class for young riders in Marquette County to build strong habits on the trails. The six-hour course focused on proper riding techniques and emergency procedures and awarded participants a Snowmobile Safety Certificate. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The Literacy Legacy Fund of Michigan distributed free books to 28 rural libraries across six Upper and six lower Michigan counties during its monthslong Giving Tuesday drive — a campaign promoting community literacy — and it will expand its reach to 40 libraries by next year. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation) announced $133 million in federal and state funds to upgrade transit vehicles and facilities across the Upper Peninsula. The grant will help local agencies modernize services, including new bus purchases for Marquette County Transit Authority. WZMQ 19
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ L’Anse Area CDC & WUPPDR announced they received state funding via the Rural Readiness Grant Program to advance planning for the redevelopment of the vacant former Winkler Nursing Home site in L’Anse. The grant will cover design, mechanical plans and cost estimates to support a new housing project. The Mining Journal
