COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Mining Journal published the 2025 Cheer Club membership list today, featuring local members from Marquette, Gwinn, Clarksburg and Ishpeming. The list also honors past members including Bruce Fletcher, William and D. Sylvia Vercoe, and Vern L’Huillier — preserving cherished community legacies.  The Mining Journal
  • The Marquette Elks Lodge donated $4,500 to Courage, Incorporated, a nonprofit that provides free outdoor excursions for individuals with disabilities; program coordinator Abby Letts and executive director Erik Conradsen accepted the donation.  The Mining Journal
  • The Mining Journal Cheer Club is accepting toy donations for children and teens in need. Donations may be dropped off today at the Mining Journal office (249 W. Washington St.) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  The Mining Journal
  • The Brits and Brews fundraiser for JJ Packs drew a good crowd Saturday night at Ore Dock Brewing Company in Marquette, where musician Jeff Krebs performed at the open mic & the band Vinyl Tap entertained local supporters.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Vista Theater group staged a holiday variety show on Sunday at Ore Dock Brewing Co. despite ongoing construction, with special guest Leslie Parkkonen performing a classic tune as the event celebrated its long-standing family roots in community arts.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Volunteer musicians performed a free brass holiday choir concert at the Marquette Regional History Museum on Sunday evening. They played festive songs from various cultures including a piece from Puerto Rico and the event is becoming an annual community tradition.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Starting this January, more than 100 members of the Marquette Choral Society are rehearsing under Dr. Erin Colwitz for an April 20 performance at Carnegie Hall and local concerts at Kaufman Auditorium on April 25-26. Registration begins Jan. 12 at the Thomas Fine Arts building at NMU with a $70 fee per semester + available scholarship funds.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A captivating photo shows Marquette’s icy waters churning this winter as the waves create dramatic patterns along the shoreline (photo by Ron Mattson).  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Marquette County Health Department’s Maternal Infant Health Program received $750 from the Keweenaw bay Indian Community Tribal Council in November — funds that will buy toothbrushes for MIHP families, while an additional $500 will support the annual Community Baby Shower providing essential supplies to expecting families in the county.  The Mining Journal
