COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Marquette's outdoor ice rinks are open daily until 11:00 p.m. at the North Marquette ball field area, near Spring and Seventh Street, and Tourist Park (with hockey nets available) to offer safe skating and pick-up hockey as long as weather permits. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU seniors built wooden structures for the upcoming Kriskindlmarkt in Ishpeming next year. Board chair Kevin Corkin said the project launched plans for similar community projects by high school students (a sign of growing local involvement). Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Little Agate Children’s Consignment Boutique is promoting sustainable parenting with a cloth diapering program now serving 90 families and aiming for 100; it will offer a free class for Sault Tribe members on Jan. 18 (1 p.m. to 3 p.m.) at the Sault Tribe Community Center in Harvey. - ➤ UPAWS is hosting its 'Home for the Holidays' feline adoption event from Thursday, Dec. 18 to Sunday, Dec. 21 at its facility in GWINN. Cats aged 1–7 are offered at $25 — seniors are free, giving local residents a chance to adopt a new furry friend. WZMQ 19

- ➤ Everyday Wines in Marquette has expanded its Baraga Avenue store with a new room—'the cheese cave'—offering cheese, chocolate, merchandise and international finds for fresh food and drink pairings this holiday season while remaining open M-Sat from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Marquette-based author Mary Anne Welch and illustrator Meghan Bjork released their children’s book ‘There’s Gnome Place Like Marquette’ on Sunday, Dec. 14 — the tale follows Little Gnome and his animal friends as he explores the starry night sky; copies are available at local stores. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Marquette organizations urge residents to reduce holiday waste by reusing wrapping paper and newspapers and recycling items at local sites (such as the transfer station on Baraga Avenue and the city’s recycling center). Citizens are encouraged to avoid returning gifts to big retailers to help prevent landfill waste. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ NotMISpecies webinars will resume in 2026 to show how community-collected data supports invasive species management, including native mussel protection and plant trend tracking. The hourlong sessions are set for Jan. 14, Feb. 4, and Mar. 25 (2025 recordings are still available). The Mining Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday, a federal judge blocked Gov. Whitmer's shutdown order for the Line 5 pipeline citing federal law — a decision that keeps the pipeline running along the Straits of Mackinac while legal challenges continue. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Marquette County received a USEPA Brownfield Community-wide Assessment Grant to fund property assessments and clean-ups of abandoned sites in K.I. Sawyer and Ishpeming. The funds awarded earlier this year to its Brownfield Redevelopment Authority are expected to boost job creation and housing through 2029. WZMQ 19
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Baraga County Memorial Hospital is showcasing a new DV5 surgical robot and hyperbaric chamber at an open house on Jan. 8 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the facility. Visitors are invited to interact with the equipment + suggest a new name for the robot on the hospital website. Upper Michigan's Source
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Jacy Weisbrod scored a career high 33 points on Wednesday night as the Wildcats beat Northwood 83 to 77 at Vandament Arena + the win improved NMU's record to 11 to 1 and the team will face Davenport on New Year's Day. WZMQ 19
- ➤ NMU running back Noah Dobert was named a D2CCA Second Team All-American, marking the first time a Wildcat has earned the honor. He finished the season with 1,656 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, including a 406-yard game against Wayne State, as NMU’s rushing attack set a new school record. WZMQ 19
