COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A group of volunteers will host a free buffet-style Christmas Day meal at Skandia Township Hall from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., offering ham, turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, cranberry sauce, and locally made pies and cookies.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Lake Superior Detachment 764 of the Marine Corps League donated a trailer full of toys to Gwinn St. Vincent de Paul (the local charity) for its Christmas toy distribution in Marquette. The donation will help bring holiday cheer to local families.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette Alternative High School students collected over 6,700 pairs of socks on Wednesday through their Rock the Socks campaign and delivered them to The Warming Center, Beacon House, Janzen House, Women’s Center & St. Vincent de Paul.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Jilbert Dairy held a free milk and butter giveaway on Wednesday morning in Marquette, funded by anonymous donor Margaret Brumm — a local philanthropist. The dairy has given away at least 3,000 gallons of milk and 2,000 lbs. of butter this year.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Local groups in Marquette Township have collaborated for 23 years on the Christmas Gifts for Veterans fundraiser, providing self-care supplies (soap and razors) requested by veterans for the holiday season.   • The Community Christmas Dinner hosted by Community Dinners Feeding Marquette County celebrates 19 years and will provide up to 1,500 meals at the Ishpeming Elks Lodge. Reservations and sponsorships are available until Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 2 p.m. by calling 906-451-4951.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Super One Foods customers in Marquette Township and Negaunee contributed $4,664.85 through pin pad donations to the U.P. Hospice Foundation, boosting efforts to improve hospice care + community support. Their donation will help expand local services.  The Mining Journal
  • UPAWS is hosting a Home for the Holidays Feline Adoption Event today through Sunday, Dec. 21 in Marquette by appointment — adoption fees are reduced for cats and kittens. Residents can visit UPAWS.org or call 906-475-666 to schedule an appointment.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The League of Women Voters of Marquette County will meet at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 7 in the Heritage Room (second floor of Peter White Public Library, 217 N. Front St.) where members learn about plans for 2026 and beyond; social time begins at 6:30 p.m.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is urging residents to get the flu vaccine as rising flu cases and a more severe strain reported in England signal a tougher season ahead. Vaccines are available at local pharmacies and clinics, though coverage in Michigan remains as low as 22%.  WZMQ 19
  • Trillium House in Marquette received a $15,000 grant from West End Health Foundation to support hospice care for West End residents over three years (covering up to 50 days of care annually).  WZMQ 19

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer announced three redevelopment projects in Marquette, Escanaba and Cadillac that will create 60 housing units with over 16.5 million dollars in investment. In Marquette, an 8,000 sqft vacant building will become a four-story mixed-use development with apartments, retail space and parking to boost downtown activity.  The Mining Journal
