COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brookridge Heights Assisted Living will host its fourth annual One Stop Holiday Shop on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 1901 Division St., inviting residents, families and community members to enjoy cookies, cocoa and live music along with holiday workshops.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Anchor Church in Marquette is hosting a free Christmas Store this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 130 W. Washington St. unit 2, where community members can shop donated new items + receive gift wrapping by volunteers.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette Arts and Music Wellness Lions Club has spread holiday cheer with art and music visits to three local sites since July and plans to host more events throughout the year, inviting residents to contact President Doug Davis to join.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette Symphony Orchestra and NMU Choir will perform the Sounds of the Holidays concerts this weekend + the Saturday performance is sold out while an abridged show is scheduled Sunday at 2 p.m. at Kaufman Auditorium.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Regional History Center held its final holiday open house Wednesday evening, where Bruce Closser read classic Christmas stories (continuing an 80-year tradition). The center will close the season with a Brass Choir concert on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 4 p.m.  WZMQ 19

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Debb Brunell, UP Michigan Works CEO, recounted a busy 2025 with over 1,200 business partnerships, 23 new apprenticeship opportunities, and 23,000 visitors at 13 offices during a TV6 studio visit; he said the organization will expand job and training services in 2026 (visit in person or online for details).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • On Jan. 1, 2026, Michigan’s minimum wage will rise from $12.48 to $13.73 while pay for minors and tipped workers increases; Marquette business owners have prepared for the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act’s adjustments (which are expected to shift overall pay scales).  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WNMU-TV got a $576,532 grant from the Public Media Bridge Fund this week to help cover losses from federal cuts. The funds will support emergency alerts, educational programming & local news despite strict future budgeting.  WZMQ 19

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Marquette and Escanaba have received a combined $2 million in state RAP funds to revitalize local properties. A vacant Marquette building at 5th and Washington will soon host two businesses and 11 apartments, while an Escanaba property will convert into a restaurant (with one apartment attached).  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Four men and six women from NMU competed at the U.P. Opener nordic skiing exhibition meet at Forestville Trailhead in Marquette Township on Saturday; Michigan Tech skiers won both divisions in the 10-kilometer skating race. NMU racers will next compete early January at the U.S. Cross Country Ski National Championships.  The Mining Journal
