COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Checker Bus and the Marquette Senior Center are offering a discounted bus tour for seniors to view holiday lights on Dec. 17 and 19. Local residents pay $10, and seniors can sign up by calling Checker Bus (906-226-7772 ext. 3).  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NTN hosted Reiboldt Ride’s annual SnowBike Grooming Fundraiser on Tuesday evening at Rippling River Resort, where every dollar raised is matched by an anonymous donor up to $10,000 to support maintenance of 26 miles of groomed trails for fat tire snowbikes. Donations remain open online until Friday, Dec. 12.  WZMQ 19
  • UPAWS is set to host the comedy fundraiser Raise the Woof at UP North Lodge on Jan. 9. The event will include bucket raffles, an open bar, light snacks, and tickets priced at $35 or $50 for two, with full tables for eight available at $250.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marshfield Clinic Marquette Center internal medicine physician Tori Nault explained Tuesday morning on TV6 that two days of resistance training with simple exercises like calf raises can boost muscle strength, mood and daily performance; the center is accepting new patients.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU swimmers and divers put on a strong show at the Calvin Invite over the weekend. Their women’s team finished second among six teams with standout efforts by Annika Geyer while full meet results are still to be updated.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech women's basketball sophomore guard Kendall Standfest was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week after her strong double-double efforts in wins over Roosevelt and Parkside last weekend. She averaged 11.5 points & 9.5 rebounds as the Huskies improved to a 6-2 league record.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan Wildcats beat the Roosevelt Lakers 85–64 at Parkside on Thursday — Cal Klesmit scored a game-high 20 points during a 15–0 burst that helped the team remain unbeaten in conference play at 2–0.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech’s Nordic ski teams began the season at the UP Opener at the Forestville Trailhead, with Markus Groethe and Greta Hansen winning individual races and the women sweeping the podium. The team will next race at the Duluth Super CXC Cup at the Grand Avenue Nordic Center this weekend.  WZMQ 19
  • The NMU women's track team opened its indoor season at UW-Oshkosh Early Bird Invite with wins by Kaitlin Smith in the pole vault and Teiolla Harvey in the weight throw + 17 top-five finishes overall. The Wildcats will compete next at the Karl Schlender Invite on Jan. 24 at UW-Whitewater.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU hockey forward Caiden Gault was named CCHA Forward of the Week after scoring three goals this weekend to lead all CCHA forwards in goals. The Wildcats will face St. Thomas at Berry Events Center this weekend (CCHA announcement).  WZMQ 19
  • The No. 17 Northern Michigan Wildcats edged Roosevelt 83 to 82 on Saturday after overcoming a 22 to 2 rally in the final minutes; Newcomer led with a season-high 21 to boost NMU to 10 to 1. NMU will host Northwood on Wednesday, Dec. 17 (5:30 p.m.).  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team finished third at the three-day Calvin Invitational in Grand Rapids Saturday scoring 1,305 points while Grand Valley State led with 2,247. Several team members will head to Sarasota, Florida Saturday morning for the Open Water Collegiate Nationals.  The Mining Journal
