COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Negaunee Downtown Development Authority will host Tinseltown, a family holiday celebration in downtown Negaunee from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., featuring a Christmas Parade, tree lighting, caroling & music, and Santa at the Elks Lodge while discussing community planning updates.  Sunny 101.9
  • The Mining Journal is accepting donations for its annual Cheer Club, which will deliver a record number of presents to children and teens in need. Donations can be dropped off at the office at 249 W. Washington St. in Marquette (8 a.m.-5 p.m.)  The Mining Journal
  • The Marquette Farmers Market is hosting Yule Markets from Monday to Saturday at the Marquette Commons to celebrate the holidays. The event offers toasty fires, free s'mores, baked goods, art and jewelry from local vendors, with themed evenings like Date Night Tuesday and Sweater Shenanigans Wednesday.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Janzen House is asking local supporters to donate items including candy, fuzzy socks, hats, shavers, and bodywash before Christmas Eve to brighten the holiday season for about 30 low-income residents. The nonprofit also provides free emergency rooms for men in need.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Friday night, the annual Downtown Marquette Winter Snow Fun Holiday Parade delighted residents when a Frosty the Snowman-themed truck along with Santa Claus drew a crowd on Third Street — local children from Negaunee also enjoyed the festive atmosphere.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hundreds gathered at NMU’s Northern Center on Saturday for the Learning to Walk Together Pow Wow, where dance, drum groups, and vendors sold handmade art + attendees donated nonperishables to support NMU’s Food Pantry.  WZMQ 19
  • A winter-themed art exhibit by U.P. artists and local community groups is on display at Peter White Public Library until Jan. 31 (the display features works in various media and decorated trees on every floor). ECONOMY NEWS

  • Drivers are paying an average of $2.82 per gallon after prices dropped 14 cents this week, AAA reported, and gas is 33 cents lower than last month and 13 cents lower than last year. Price changes follow lower demand and rising oil inventories, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, NMU Health & Human Performance students presented final research projects at the Student Sports Medicine Research Symposium at the Northern Center as part of final exam week. Their projects covered athletic training, nutritional timing & concussion protocols.  WZMQ 19

  • Physical therapist Ethan Hickcox and sports expert Nic Dobbs advise that proper warm-ups and layered dressing help reduce injury risks during cold weather exercise.   • The Ishpeming Ski Club will host its 139th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament Jan. 16–18, 2026, featuring national junior qualifiers, bonfires, concessions, fireworks and Booster Button sales that fund youth ski programs while marking the 100th anniversary of Suicide Hill.  The Mining Journal
