COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bothwell Middle School collected nearly 2,700 cans for TV6 Canathon yesterday — a community effort by students and families. The wrap-up show airs Monday, Dec. 8 at 9 a.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Ford River Lions Club will host a free Community Kids Christmas Party on Saturday, Dec. 13, from noon to 3 p.m. Families can join a hayride from the Ford River Pub to the clubhouse to enjoy hot dogs, sloppy joes, cookie decorating, crafts and a Santa photo session.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette County’s Shop with a Cop returns for its 17th year on Dec. 13 when officers will escort children in need to Walmart, and donations can be made at The Women’s Center—a program led by Sheriff Greg Zyburt and MDT Coordinator Joy Swanson.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Thursday evening, Santa Claus visited U.P. State Bank to meet families during the early holiday season, and kids enjoyed crafting ornaments and eating festive treats while waiting their turn; more appearances by Santa are planned as Christmas draws near.  WZMQ 19
  • The Upper Peninsula Children’s Museum held its 22nd annual Celebrity Art Auction Thursday night to raise funds and showcase over 20 artists, including Love Bug’s singing telegram performance — the museum paused operations for the event and reopened today.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU will unveil the tribal nation flags at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11 at the Superior Dome as a tribute to five local tribes (Sault Ste. Marie, Bay Mills, Hannahville, Keweenaw Bay and Lac Vieux Desert).  The North Wind

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Storms this past week left snowmobile trails impassable in parts of six U.P. counties. Local clubs and the DNR are working to clear routes and ensure safety, and trails in Dickinson County will remain closed until at least Dec. 15 (riders should watch for hazards).  The Mining Journal
  • Circle K now has vape recycling buckets in Harvey, Ishpeming, Marquette and Negaunee since Monday to safely dispose of nicotine vapes. The program helps prevent battery fires and water pollution (previously, only a local store offered recycling).  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congress approved a provision to ban hemp-derived THC products with over 0.4 mg per container — a move closing a loophole in the 2018 Farm Bill — and the ban will take effect next November. A U.P. dispensary said it does not expect the new rule to affect its current offerings.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Michigan Lottery warns Marquette residents to be alert for scam artists claiming lottery wins and charging fees, reminding players that all prize claims are processed free with a valid winning ticket.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cal Klesmit scored a career-high 30 points to lift the Wildcats past the Parkside Rangers 82-78 on Thursday night during the GLIAC opener. Northern Michigan improved to a 5-1 record and will meet the Lakers Saturday at 4 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Northern Michigan football standouts Noah Dobert and Jax Hertel were named to the D2CCA All-Super Region 3 First Team — the first Wildcats honored since 2018. Dobert set record rushing marks and earned GLIAC Offensive Back of the Year while Hertel led the defense with 101 tackles.  WZMQ 19
  • WZMQ 19 unveiled its U.P. Boys Basketball Preseason Dream Team on Dec. 4 featuring top players like Forest Park junior Vic Giuliani, Marquette senior Connor Fierstine and Menominee senior Tanner Theuerkauf who won Mr. U.P. Football on Nov. 30+ the selection spotlights local talent in the U.P.  WZMQ 19
  • Thomas Matthews and McKenna Wnuk of the U.S. Alpine Luge Team will head to Europe for the Alpine Luge World Cup. They train at Lucy Hill — the only track in the nation, giving them a local advantage.  Upper Michigan's Source
