COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After Thanksgiving break, Feeding America West Michigan held drive-thru pantry events on Wednesday at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique, Ontonagon Village Fire Hall, and Munising Wesleyan Church, and will host two events today at North Iron Church in Ishpeming and Norway Community Food Pantry in Dickinson County. Families must provide their names, addresses + household sizes when receiving food.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Feeding America West Michigan, working with Silver Creek Church & Silver Creek Thrift, will host a mobile food pantry on Thursday, Dec. 11 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey, offering food boxes via a drive-thru for about 550 families while supplies last.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • NMU Theatre and Dance presents Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer at Forest Roberts Theatre today. The production runs today through Dec. 6 and again Dec. 11-13, and director Jalina McClain said it offers a family-friendly spectacle — including classic holiday music, puppeteering, and stage flight.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Sandy Knoll Coders from Sandy Knoll Elementary are raising funds to cover travel costs for the FIRST LEGO League state championships on Dec. 20 & have already raised over half of the $5,000 goal, seeking local donations to support their first state appearance.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Area Public Schools handed out 61 coats, 73 snow pants, and 90 pairs of boots today after donations from the Kaufman Foundation and JP Electric boosted its Coats for Kids program; the initiative aims to remove winter weather as a barrier to students' learning.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette-Alger RESA will host a Sensory Friendly Santa event for youth with sensory support needs at the RESA building on East Ohio Street on Dec. 16-18, and a similar event is planned in Munising. Registration is required as more details will soon be on the RESA website.  Sunny 101.9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Superior Watershed Partnership activated two new DC fast charging stations at the Keweenaw Co-op in Hancock as part of the National Park Service Mobility Challenge from the state Office of Future Mobility & Electrification, marking a continued rollout of EV charging sites in the region.  WZMQ 19

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Superiorland Library Cooperative Board will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 in the Heritage Room at Peter White Public Library (217 N. Front St.) to discuss board business.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Upper Peninsula Health Plan urges Marquette residents to get a flu shot ahead of holiday gatherings. Clinical coordinators Koren & Matheison note that flu shots are available at pharmacies, health care offices, and local health departments to help protect families.  Sunny 101.9
  • Marquette Senior Services Manager Maureen McFadden advised seniors and those with health issues to warm up before shoveling snow as winter hazards raise the risk of injury, and local health officials recommend asking a neighbor for help (or opting for delivery) to stay safe.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Winter recreation facilities are preparing for an active season as Marquette Mountain schedules its opening on Dec. 12, with upgrades to lifts, food orders, and trail grooming underway & promising fresh snow.   • On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the Negaunee Miners boys basketball team opened their season at home with a 54-35 win over the Escanaba Eskymos. Head coach Bill Hill made his debut and the team will face its rivals in Marquette next Tuesday.  Sunny 101.9
