COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofits in the U.P. are taking part in Giving Tuesday to collect money and support local needs such as mental health, winter help and social services organized by Give906.Grow and Lead. Live@NMU and Habitat for Humanity are showing kindness through donations and volunteer work—actions that help people in our community.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Downtown Marquette will hold its holiday parade this Friday at 6 p.m. on Third St. ending at the Marquette Commons, where attendees can vote for their favorite float for a cash prize, enjoy live music, see Santa and watch the tree lighting at 7 p.m.—festivities will end at 8 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • K.I. Sawyer community members attended an event Tuesday night where local groups introduced a two-year food forest project that will plant over 200 trees and fruit varieties along the Silver Lead Greenway connecting the elementary school and Little Trout Lake—this project will offer workshops and volunteer opportunities and is funded by a $100,000 DNR grant to improve food access.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Lake Superior Community Partnership is accepting nominations until this Friday for the 2025 Distinguished Service Award—awarded to a business and an individual for their community service work. The award will be given on Thursday, April 16—at the group's annual dinner.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Marquette is expected to see scattered lake effect snow and heavy bursts today with winds gusting over 30 mph—posing travel hazards as temperatures remain in the teens and 20s. Forecasts warn that drifting snow and cold wind chills will continue at times through Saturday.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Michigan DNR reported that the 2025 firearm deer season in Upper Michigan saw a 15% drop in the number of deer taken – Menominee County ranked in the top three with over 2,500 deer harvested. The late November weather reduced deer movement while the animals remained in good condition.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported increased influenza cases that may signal an early flu season and urged residents to get a flu shot due to low vaccination coverage. Health experts say the current vaccine can reduce severe hospital visits for children and adults—making vaccination a key defense against the virus.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Medical experts say that having a health care companion helps older adults talk to providers and follow care instructions—Dr. Kullgren recommends bringing a sibling or adult child for support—so patients do not miss important steps.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • UP Health System – Marquette won the 2025 Safely Averting NTSV Cesareans Award for stopping 11 cesarean births since January — this shows its team of doctors, nurses and staff work hard to keep mothers and babies safe.  WZMQ 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • Menominee’s football team won a state title with a 34-6 victory over Schoolcraft in the MHSAA Division 7 Final at Ford Field on Sunday. The Maroons showed great effort—senior Tanner Theuerkauf led the offense while running back Clayton Miller rushed for 112 yards—capturing the first U.P. 11-player state championship since 2015.  The Mining Journal
  • Senior Mya Hemmer of Ishpeming led 16 area high school volleyball players to earn All-U.P. honors during a mid-November awards meeting at Northern Michigan University in Marquette—she was named Division 4 Defensive Player of the Year and selected for the seven-member All-U.P. Dream Team as the only area player. Hemmer recorded 326 kills, 78 blocks, and 43 digs while other area players also earned honors in Division 1-3 and Division 4, with a total of 49 players recognized.  The Mining Journal
