- ➤ Over 100 ballet dancers rehearsed on Sunday at Kaufman Auditorium for the Nutcracker Ballet—an annual Christmas performance set for 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. December 6. The show will debut 10-year-old Isla McCarthy as Clara and feature 11 community choreographers as part of a long-held local tradition. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ MooseWood in Marquette will host a members-only art program on December 9 and 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. for participants 12 and older who will make ceramic holiday ornaments and decorative luminaries—materials and step-by-step guidance are provided for both the clay forming and glazing processes, and finished pieces can be picked up at the center; the cost is $20 for both sessions. - ➤ Jack Rantanen, a local lineman killed on the job in August when he was struck by an inattentive driver on County Road 553, is honored by his friend Joe Boburka through a scholarship and a sale of hats — the proceeds will support high school students planning to enroll in line school — as a tribute to his memory. - ➤ A new study in Northern Michigan shows that flashing LED lights on highway curve signs slowed drivers on a 1.7-mile stretch of M-32 near Gaylord during wintry conditions. Eastbound drivers slowed by an average of 1.5 mph and westbound drivers by 0.9 mph—MDOT said the costly technology will be used only in areas with serious safety problems. The Mining Journal
