COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today the Winter OutBack Art Fair at Lakeview Arena features 10 local artists selling handmade ornaments, jewelry, and festive household items—each piece made with care to offer unique holiday gifts that support our U.P. creative community. Visitors can shop and enjoy the work of Marquette’s local talents during the fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Mining Journal is accepting donations for its annual Cheer Club drive, which will help deliver a record number of presents to children and teens in need — donations can be dropped off at the office on 249 W. Washington St. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette County families are keeping a long-standing holiday tradition alive at Meister Tree Farm, a family-owned business open until December 15 that offers both pre-cut trees and a cut-your-own option. The farm also features a wagon ride to see Santa— and a visit with Mrs. Claus— that adds a special touch to the season.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Nearly 300 walkers and runners took part in the Turkey Trot on Friday after the race was postponed from Thanksgiving due to heavy snow; participants started at Marquette Senior High School, ran to Tourist Park, and returned to finish at the school—proceeds are set to support the orchestra by funding needed instruments.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Folksy words and music will fill the Peter White Public Library on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. as Whiskey Ryan performs as the special guest star alongside local regulars like B.G. Bradley, Marty Achatz, Jacque Love, and Big Lake Acoustic—Jim Edwards and Nicole Walton will also be present.  The Mining Journal
  • The Peter White Public Library will host a Zoom presentation Tuesday from 6:30—7:30 p.m. where Dr. Walker will explain how Santa Claus evolved from a fourth-century bishop to the familiar red-suited icon with no admission charge.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recovery efforts continue after Wednesday’s Thanksgiving storm as crews work in Keweenaw & Houghton counties to restore power and clear fallen trees while emergency warming centers help residents without heat. Law enforcement urges locals to check on neighbors & call for help if they are concerned.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette will close West Main Street to eastbound traffic between Third Street and Front Street on Monday for a water main repair—work will begin at 8 a.m. and is set to finish by day's end.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Sault Tribe Health Division will open its new health center at 1210 S.Front St., Marquette, from 1-3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1—light refreshments will follow a ribbon cutting ceremony. Health Division CEO James Benko and tribal board members will join the celebration.  The Mining Journal
