Good morning, Marquette. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Blizzard conditions expected tonight and the local shelter has been at capacity for weeks, so Room at the Inn Executive Director Chelsie Wilkinson urged residents to find safety at nearby laundromats, Walmart, or the police station. The Marquette City Commission is exploring temporary housing options (such as the Presque Isle pavilion) until more space opens at the Salvation Army in January.  WZMQ 19
  • The Salvation Army in Marquette served a hot Thanksgiving meal on Wednesday and gave away about 150 free coats to people in need in Marquette and Ishpeming. It will follow up by serving a Christmas Eve meal and asking for donations through red kettles as well as volunteer bell ringers.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • This year's Goodwill Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Westwood Mall in Marquette went off without a hitch as rain did not stop a strong turnout. Attendees saw Santa, dance routines from Studio Dance Arts, a snowblower giveaway won by Eric Bentlage, and a state policeman caught a Grinch—trying to steal ornaments—ensuring a safe, festive night.  Sunny 101.9
  • Habitat for Humanity of Marquette County announced that next week’s GivingTuesday donations will help cover heater repair costs for residents with non-working heaters — a help needed as cold weather approaches. Executive Director Deanna Johnson said the Home Repair Program is under funding constraints and sizable donations will support low-income families needing heat this winter.  WZMQ 19

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Today sees more cooking fires than any other day with over three times the usual number during Thanksgiving, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Marquette Township Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Mike Gregorich said — using timers, keeping pan handles out of reach, and covering a grease fire with a pan instead of water can help keep kitchens safe.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County agencies are providing emergency help for Wednesday’s blizzard conditions by advising residents to travel only for urgent needs and to have a vehicle safety kit ready—especially if facing long-term power outages or needing shelter. Rooms at the Inn at 447 W. Washington St is prepared to shelter those in danger—residents should call 911 or contact 211 if they need assistance.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Michigan State Police warn Marquette residents to be cautious of holiday scams ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday as scammers often request urgent money transfers or personal details, especially from the elderly. The police advise using secure payment methods and verifying any suspicious offers with a bank or trusted friend — before sending any funds.  WZMQ 19
  • The Marquette County Road Commission is preparing for a Thanksgiving weekend blizzard as 62 plow drivers are set for 12-hour shifts to help keep roads clear. Operations and Maintenance Director Ross Olsen urged drivers to keep 200 feet behind trucks with flashing lights—ensuring safer travel in poor visibility.  Upper Michigan's Source
