Zonta International in Marquette is hosting a virtual campaign to stop violence against women that calls on people to post photos, wear orange, and visit club booths.

The 16-day effort runs from today until December 10 — local vice president Lorena Donnellan said it highlights freedom from violence as a universal right.

Marquette County Habitat for Humanity is raising $5,000 on GivingTuesday to fund emergency furnace replacements through its Home Repairs Program to keep residents warm.

Donations can be made online, in person, or by mailing a check to 2354 US Hwy 41 South.

Local groups and businesses in Marquette will serve Thanksgiving meals and take-out on Thursday—several restaurants offer special hours and reserved menus that require calling ahead due to high demand.

Marquette County’s Salvation Army is looking for local volunteers to serve as bell ringers at sites including Jubilee Foods, Super One Foods, Walmart, Walgreens, Marketplace Foods, and Lofaro’s Fresh Market to support programs that provide hot meals, mobile kitchens, coat drives, and student food assistance during Thanksgiving Week. Director Cari Detmers said shifts run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the agency has been active in the community for 130 years.

MARESA held its second CTExtravaganza at NMU’s Jacobetti Complex on Monday during Thanksgiving break, where hundreds of 8th graders learned about work options from local professionals + they discussed jobs in fields like business and health.

Later, high school students visited a job fair with over 50 groups + MARESA said it will hold the event every fall.

Teachers in Marquette and across Michigan are taking second jobs because rising health care costs, student loans and education expenses make it hard to live on one salary—about 40% of Michigan Education Association members work extra to cover these costs.

Younger teachers are especially affected by a low starting salary of $41,645.

Area seniors will receive tech coaching at the Peter White Public Library Heritage Room on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec.

The Marquette City Commission voted unanimously tonight to house up to ten homeless individuals at the Presque Isle Pavilion from December 1 to January 1—Room at the Inn is full—and city staff will work with the agency to plan transportation, safety measures and a move to the Salvation Army on Barraga Avenue after January 1.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a new environmental impact statement for the proposed Line 5 project that recommends horizontal directional drilling as an alternative to a four-mile tunnel—this method is expected to limit long-term environmental impacts aside from vegetation removal. A public hearing is scheduled for December 3 and comments are due by December 5.

Marquette's Public Works Department closed part of Division Street on Monday for a water main repair.

The repair will continue through Tuesday with work on southbound lanes between Hampton Street — Joliet Road.
