COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marquette volunteers filled 75 Christmas stockings with cards, treats, and trinkets on Sunday to bring holiday cheer to active troops before Thanksgiving—coordinated by First Presbyterian Church and Soldiers’ Angels to boost morale amid delayed pay. The effort is set to remind soldiers they are cared for while serving far from home.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Mining Journal is accepting donations for its 2025 Christmas Cheer Club—aimed at providing a record number of presents for children and teens in need. Donations are welcomed at its office at 249 W. Washington St. from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette will hold the annual TubaChristmas performance on Dec 7 at 1:30 p.m. at the Marquette Regional History Center (145 Spring St.) where tuba and euphonium players will play familiar Christmas carols. The free event is for families (it will also be live-streamed by Peter White Public Library).  The Mining Journal
  • Today, the Westerly Winds Big Band held its last gig of the year in Marquette, where dancers enjoyed swing music from the 1930s and 1940s along with modern jazz pieces—vocalist Sara Parks said live performances offer a unique experience.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette Maritime Museum will host a December Maritime History on Tap event at Ore Dock Brewing Company where Jack Deo will present 'All Hands on Deck: Recently Discovered Maritime Photos' at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2—a brief membership meeting will be held before his talk while tickets cost $5.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette Choral Society will perform Holiday Classics at two December concerts on December 6 at 7:30 p.m. and December 7 at 3 p.m. at Reynolds Recital Hall at NMU—tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for children. It will also host a free Carol Sing-Along on December 19 from 5-6 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church where guests may bring a food donation.  The Mining Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Motorists in Michigan are paying 9 cents more for gas as prices jumped to $3.11 per gallon ahead of the Thanksgiving travel period that begins Tuesday, November 25. In Upper Michigan, Marquette County has the lowest average at $2.81 plus Mackinac County tops at $3.27.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • This summer, the U.S. Geological Survey flew low-level surveys over Marquette and northern Wisconsin to collect high-resolution data on subsurface minerals and bedrock to about 10,000 feet—experts say the detailed maps will help local officials plan water use and land projects—and the work is part of a national effort to update our geological understanding.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marquette residents caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s can register for Savvy Caregiver—a free, nationally recognized training program offered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress—to learn skills that help them manage caregiving and take care of themselves; the six-week workshop will run on Thursdays from Jan. 15 to Feb. 19 via Zoom with registration closing on Dec. 15 due to limited class size.  The Mining Journal
