Federal SNAP benefits have resumed as the government reopened, but local food pantries still face high demand after a 43-day shutdown.

The Salvation Army in Marquette served over 3000 people in the past two weeks and launched a coat drive with more than 300 donated coats—volunteers are still needed.

Sawyer Elementary, created an online Resource Hub that gathers local food and utility assistance information to help residents access holiday meals, diaper banks, and more—she will also offer in-person support Mondays from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Peter White Public Library and Wednesdays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at 906 Community Cafe. This hub, pushed through social media, is designed to give the community easy access to all needed resources.

The Marquette Harbor Rotary Club donated $5,000 to the TV6 Canathon to help food pantries facing delays with SNAP benefits, said club president Jim Cantrill — the gift aims to support those in need during the holiday season.

At 7 p.m. Thursday in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library, science writer Alexis Dahl will lead Fire & Ice: A Michigan Geology Tour to explain how Michigan’s flat farmland, rolling hills, and jagged cliffs each tell a story from billions of years ago.

Attendees will join a Q&A session after the tour and pay a suggested donation of $5 for adults and $10 for families.

Marquette's Ore Dock Brewing Company was awarded a $100,000 grant from MDARD to upgrade its carbon dioxide and nitrogen systems for brewing.

The funds will help the company improve its carbonation process—supporting its commitment to sourcing locally.

Randi Clemens, an NMU educator and alumna in the English Department, was selected as one of 16 statewide for the Michigan Arts and Culture Council’s 2025–2026 Rising Leaders cohort—she is the only Upper Peninsula representative and said the program will help her grow as a leader to support arts in Marquette.

AAA of Michigan said the state average price for regular unleaded gas is now $3.02—9 cents lower than last week and 19 cents higher than a month ago.

Prices vary by county, with Marquette County at $2.90 and Mackinac County at $3.29.

Researchers from Governors State University studied invasive earthworms in the Huron Mountains and found that these nonnative worms are speeding up soil nutrient loss and altering forest soils—USDA said most North American earthworms arrived during European colonization.

The study noted that different worm sizes affect soil layers in unique ways, a finding that will help guide future management efforts.
