COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Fresh Coast Beauty is launching a community donation drive to assemble and distribute women’s hygiene kits for local residents in need after SNAP benefits were canceled. Donations may be dropped off Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.—5 p.m. at the Superior Salon & Spa entrance on Commerce Drive. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Federal SNAP benefits in Marquette will be fully restored Monday after a 43-day shutdown increased the demand at food pantries. The Salvation Army and United Way report that community need remains high—volunteers and donations are still essential. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Lakeview Elementary students collected 2,856 food items this month for the TV6 Canathon organized by Negaunee Public Schools and United Steelworkers, and the union will split the donations between local pantries — St. Vincents in Negaunee and the Salvation Army in Ishpeming — while also hosting pizza parties for the classrooms with the highest totals. - ➤ Maritime history fans gathered at NMU Sonderegger Symposium on Friday in Marquette to explore the legacy of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking and other lesser-known aspects of Great Lakes maritime history. The event at the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center featured scholars, divers, and authors and ended with a performance by Celtic trio The Knockabouts—continuing a 25-year tradition. - ➤ Northern Michigan University’s Department of Music will host a faculty and staff appreciation concert on Tuesday, November 18 at Reynolds Recital Hall in Marquette — the program will feature music by Vivaldi, Handel, and Lady Gaga along with the premiere of 'Fields of Cloverland' written by Tim DeMarte. - ➤ On November 14, NMU’s Hospitality Program began a new collaboration with Delft Bistro—chef Alden MacDonald and manager Orion Ingmire explained that students will plate an entree as a final project and the best dishes will be featured on the menu in December. Sunny 101.9
- ➤ NMU Center for Native American Studies held a round dance event Friday where students, faculty, staff and family learned Cree dance steps to honor Native traditions — CNAS director Tyler Dettloff said the event prepares participants for upcoming community dances. - ➤ Bird watchers in Marquette reported that winter has brought a mix of rare sightings, including snowy owls near Lakeshore Blvd and Whitefish Point alongside flocks of bohemian waxwings and pine grosbeaks active in local feeders—each arrival linked to the season’s cold air. One resident noted that a pine grosbeak, after colliding with a window and losing its tail, returned the next day to feed. The Mining Journal

- ➤ NMU men’s soccer team made history by defeating the #2 seeded Roosevelt Lakers 2-1 in overtime at Robbert C. Braddock Field—advancing to the GLIAC Championship. They will face #1 seeded Saginaw Valley State on Sunday, November 16 at 1 p.m. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Menominee’s Tanner Theuerkauf was named Mr. UP Football and Offensive Player of the Year while Escanaba’s Taylor Asgaard earned Defensive Player of the Year—Marquette’s Pavel McCutcheon was honored as Mitchell Snyder Lineman and awards also recognized Menominee and Bark River-Harris teams and Escanaba’s Bailey Lamb as Coach of the Year.
