COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland advised homeowners leaving for winter travel to shut off water supplies to prevent flooding, set thermostats at 55 degrees or higher to stop freezing, and use timers on lights—she also recommended holding mail or asking a trusted neighbor to pick up packages to deter burglary. - ➤ The United Way of Marquette County and Yoopers United are working with NMU students to bring holiday gifts to local children in need through six Giving Trees—set up at the Marquette Township Office, Kate’s Place Salon, Provisions, Contrast Coffee and The Crib. Community members can take a gift tag from a tree and return the item by December 15 so that children in Lake Superior Village receive items on their wish lists. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Grow & Lead is urging U.P. organizations and nonprofits to register for Give906 so they can be added to the Giving Guide—this enables donors to choose among local GivingTuesday initiatives. Nonprofits have until Nov. 29 to sign up while Grow & Lead offers a free 30-minute consultation—aimed at helping groups prepare for GivingTuesday on Dec. 2. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Multiple Taco Bell locations in Upper Michigan, including Marquette, are teaming with TV6 to offer a free taco when a donor brings in at least one Canathon can this weekend+ each donation supports a local food bank. The offer gives one taco per person per visit and is available at both storefronts and drive-thrus+ groups visiting on different trips may receive additional tacos. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ U.P. Home, Health and Hospice will give away two 55-inch smart TVs as part of separate drawings for the Canathon and Toys-4-Tots drives over the coming weeks — donors must provide three cans, nonperishable food items, or one new toy worth $5. Donations can be dropped off at the Ishpeming or Marquette offices — they are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Upper Michigan's Source
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lakeview Elementary School held its annual veteran parade Wednesday morning after a Monday snow day postponed the event—nearly 20 veterans received high fives from students and staff—and celebrated local heroes in red, white and blue. Principal Heather Holman said the parade—led by Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops carrying banners and an American flag—helped students learn the value of honoring veterans and teamwork. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Marquette Senior High School opens its musical 'Hadestown' this weekend at Kaufman Auditorium (shows are Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 7 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.). The show is based on Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice as well as Hades and Persephone and was prepared by about 50 students since early September. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Ford Airport recorded higher travel numbers this fall and officials said weather delays briefly halted flights last week—CSA Air plans extra cargo flights during the holiday season to meet demand across the upper Midwest. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ MarqTran is increasing winter services despite state funding falling from 60 percent to 38 percent, and officials reported more than 600 daily riders with over 225,000 trips so far—Rich Laurich urged everyone to request rides early due to high demand. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Upper Peninsula lawmakers and union leaders warned that a state energy proposal will raise electricity costs and endanger mining jobs at Tilden Mine by imposing surcharges starting January 1 — they urged the Senate to pass bills so natural gas plants can run until 2049. WZMQ 19
- ➤ The National Weather Service held its first-ever Integrated Warning Team meeting in Marquette Township at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Station on Wednesday to improve weather communications. Meteorologists, emergency managers, and school administrators met and discussed NWS winter services — planning future seasonal workshops for better coordination. Upper Michigan's Source
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Providers reported that a shortage of psychiatric beds in the Upper Peninsula has made it hard to get timely care, with Mandy Padget of Northpointe Behavioral Health Services saying that private hospitals often refuse patients while state hospitals accept Medicaid only in dire cases — Tonya Darner of UPHS - Marquette Market noted that high daily costs quickly drain general funds and officials are urging lawmakers to find lasting solutions. - ➤ Data from the Michigan League for Public Policy shows that Michigan’s low birthweight rate increased from 8.4% in 2012-2014 to 9.1% in 2021-2023.
