COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Al's and Sal's Towing is holding an Emergency Food Tow in Ishpeming on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. — residents can leave bags of canned goods, pasta, rice and cereal outside their homes to support the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Tickets are on sale now for the 2026 Marquette County Police and Firefighters’ Ball—an event that will support local law enforcement, emergency personnel and charities by raising funds for families in need. Board member Jessica Marrin said tickets sell quickly and the ball will be held January 31 from 6 to 11 p.m. with general tickets at $85 and police or firefighter tickets at $35.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Ending Hunger launches its Community Canathon Initiative to boost local food collections—volunteers will meet Friday at 4 p.m. at Harlow Park to distribute flyers—and volunteers will regroup Sunday at 10 a.m. to pick up donations.  Upper Michigan's Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Nov 10 fifty years ago the Edmund Fitzgerald sank on Lake Superior after worsening weather led to reported damage and loss of radar contact near Caribou Shoal—resulting in the loss of 29 crew—and TV6+ will air a special investigation on Nov 10 that explores the vessel’s final hours.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • John U. Bacon, author of The Gales of November: The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald, will hold a book signing at Barrel + Beam on Friday, Nov. 7. Snowbound Books will offer copies of his book—details previewed by Jenny Kalejs at TV6—giving readers new insights into the ship’s crew and captain.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Modern Drift Boutique will host a holiday fashion show at the Mather Inn in Ishpeming on Nov. 15—tickets cost $25 and include raffle bucket tickets, treats and a stocking stuffer bar—while models of all ages showcase a Hallmark Christmas theme and the event welcomes toy donations for Toys for Tots.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The NMU Wildcat Performing Arts Academy is showing The Spongebob Musical – Youth Edition at Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre through Sunday. The production, directed by James Porras and featuring young local talent, has evening performances at 7:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and matinees at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MiLEAP and the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District launched a new wage plan for early childhood teachers that offers monthly stipends. Part-time educators will receive $200 and full-time teachers plus assistants will get $300 per month — a measure designed to keep teachers in the community — and the program will run through September.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Ishpeming Public Schools passed a $3.7M bond proposal—approved by nearly 200 voters—to build new locker rooms, bathrooms, a concession stand and repave tennis courts at its athletic field. New construction will begin in early 2026 as the district prepares to enhance athletic facilities for future students.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU Theatre and Dance students joined lacrosse players on the soccer practice field Wednesday to exchange skills—students learned lacrosse drills while athletes practiced stage combat. Coach LeMay said the joint practice bolstered teamwork and challenged both groups to step outside their comfort zones.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette Township is waiting for the final payment to complete the sale of a 5.3-acre lot behind Goodwill — Renovare and Wildflower Homes plan to develop 48 workforce housing units there. Once the sale is finalized and permits are approved, the developer will start building the units next year.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Abbie Miles, a sophomore transfer from Albion College, won her weight-class title at the Pointer Open at Stevens Point — she pinned her opponent quickly in the semifinals and finals. NMU wrestlers will next compete at the Adrian Open at Adrian College on Saturday — the win boosts their momentum with seven meets scheduled before the end of 2025.  The Mining Journal
