COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fresh Coast Beauty is accepting donations for women’s hygiene kits for local moms and women as owner Jessica Mariin said the drive helps those affected by the loss of SNAP benefits. Donations can be dropped off at the store or ordered through their Amazon Wishlist until November 15th.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Nonprofits, TV6 employees and United Way volunteers gathered Friday at Walmart in Marquette Township to kick off the TV6 Canathon—this year the event will measure success by the number of items donated rather than weight—while the drive runs through November to help pantries facing shortages.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Last night, residents in Marquette, Ishpeming and Negaunee trick-or-treated from 4 to 7 p.m. while Gwinn hosted trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m.—authorities closed part of Pine Street in Forsyth Township and warned motorists to slow down and watch for pedestrians.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Marquette Male Chorus will present its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 at Messiah Lutheran Church on W Magnetic St. The program features songs by Gordon Lightfoot and patriotic tunes to honor veterans + a $10 suggested door donation.  The Mining Journal
  • The Players de Noc will perform Ten November at the Besse Theater in Escanaba on Nov 9 at 7 p.m.—a stage reading by Steven Dietz that retells the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and ends with a bell ceremony honoring all 29 crew members and sailors lost on the Great Lakes.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • WNMU-TV will host a free screening of Ken Burns’ new documentary on the American Revolution on November 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the Northern Center at NMU (the film premieres on WNMU-TV on November 16th and local historians will lead discussion afterwards).  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marquette Area Public Schools received overall positive community feedback from a survey that collected 1,929 responses and showed over half supported a $60 million bond proposal for essential upgrades including HVAC and classrooms. The board must approve a final proposal before the plan goes to a vote in May 2026 — a move that reflects community confidence in the district’s fiscal responsibility.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bipartisan legislation introduced by Senator Gary Peters to boost Great Lakes fisheries research passed the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works — the Great Lakes Fisheries Research Reauthorization Act will fund the US Geological Survey’s Great Lakes Science Center for five more years and now moves to the full Senate.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Superior Watershed Partnership said reforms in the Michigan Energy Assistance Program have increased funding and expanded eligibility so U.P. residents with income challenges can get help with heat and electric bills starting this fall. The nonprofit received $5 million to offer direct payments—affordable payment plans, energy education, and home assessments for income-qualified households.  The Mining Journal
  • Effective today, a winter parking ban is in force along all Marquette streets and alleys from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. until April 1 to allow safe plowing—warnings may be issued but tickets can cost at least $75 after plowing starts, and downtown parking is free after 3:00 p.m. from November 14 to December 25 while similar bans begin today in Ishpeming and Negaunee.  WZMQ 19

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU women’s soccer beat Roosevelt 5-1 on Halloween in a cold, rainy game — five Wildcats scored with goals by Alyse Daavettila, Addison Frantti, Hannah Kastamo, Kenna Alexander, and Gretchen Ellis. The team outshot Roosevelt and will host Parkside on November 2 at 11:00 a.m. — the win boosted their season standings.  WZMQ 19
  • The Negaunee Miners opened their postseason on October 31 when they trailed to the Ogemaw Heights Falcons 29—28 in overtime after missing the extra point that would have given them the lead. Both teams scored only one touchdown in the second half and overtime—leaving the Falcons with the win.  Sunny 101.9
  • NMU men’s soccer beat Roosevelt 2-1 on a breezy Halloween evening at the NMU Soccer Field—Alessandro Scialanga scored a long free kick and Ian Weimer doubled the lead after Roosevelt had a player sent off, which helped shift the GLIAC standings as NMU will host Purdue Northwest on Sunday while the women’s team plays Parkside at 11 a.m.  WZMQ 19
