COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Federal SNAP benefits may run dry Saturday if the shutdown continues, so TV6 Canathon is funneling donations weekly through United Way to help local food pantries buy supplies—traditional food collections will start Friday.   • United Way of Marquette County began its annual fundraising campaign yesterday — Campaign Co-Chairs Jesse Renfors and Rebecca Bartelme said the donations will support 30 member agencies serving local needs.  Sunny 101.9
  • Police in Marquette advise children to trick or treat from 4 to 7 p.m. on Halloween and urge parents to escort younger kids, check that costumes are safe, use crosswalks, and visit only well-lit homes — a measure that includes checking online for safety if needed.  Upper Michigan's Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Utility vehicles from the Marquette Board of Light and Power lined North Third Street Monday to create a tunnel to the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home where services for 25-year-old Jack Rantanen—Marquette Senior High School graduate and IBEW Local 876 member fatally injured on M-553 on Oct. 20—were held.  The Mining Journal

  • The Marquette County Small Business Celebration will honor local businesses on November 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Ishpeming as the Lake Superior Community Partnership recognized honorees such as Queen City Running Company, West End Gymnastics, AV Rental Company, and The Lumberjack Tavern with Alexander Kofsky named Small Business Champion — the event is expected to provide a key networking opportunity.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Control+Alt+Delete, a fast-paced play about tech startup culture, will run at NMU’s Panowski Black Box Theatre starting tomorrow through Saturday and again next Thursday through Saturday plus Saturday matinees at 1:00 p.m. Director Jimmy Ludwig discussed the play’s background on Mark+Walt in the Morning.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northern Michigan University held its 58th annual Fall Semester Job Fair on Wednesday – 250 students met with 63 business vendors and exchanged resumes, with some securing internships and summer jobs as they planned post-college careers.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Gwinn Area Community Schools has received a new propane bus from the Michigan Department of Education as part of its Clean Bus Energy Grant to cut diesel use and lower costs—transportation director Pete Dohrenwend said the district is replacing older diesel buses with cost-effective propane models that improve air quality.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • A majority of parents and residents support a $60 million bond proposal to fund facility upgrades in Marquette Area Public Schools, survey results from September showed. Officials said the input from 1,929 respondents — collected via mail and online submissions — will guide the School Board's future planning.  The Mining Journal

  • Amy Williams, a Physical Therapist Assistant at Active's Ishpeming Clinic, spoke on October 29th during Mark & Walt in the Morning about her career path, the skills needed to become a PTA, and what sparked her interest in the field. REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Interest rates for mortgages in Marquette fell from 7% at the start of the year to 6.06% for 30-year fixed loans and 5.47% for 15-year loans as of late October—local lenders say this drop increases buyers' purchasing power and eases the competitive market. Experts note that a $200,000 loan now gives roughly $16,000 more in buying power, making this a key development for homebuyers.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • West Branch Sportsmen’s Club is hosting Deer Rifle Sight-In Days on November 1st and 8th in Skandia to help hunters adjust their rifle scopes before deer season opens on November 15th.
