COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ This afternoon in downtown Marquette, about 600 people joined Trick or Trot at 100 Washington Street where a 5k run started the event and kids enjoyed the Monster Mile before trick-or-treating — local businesses gave out candy and race proceeds supported JJPacks and the Negaunee High School Athletics Booster Club while winners received free shoes from Queen City Running. - ➤ The St. Peter Cathedral Woman Caring and Serving/Altar Society will host a bazaar at the St. Peter Cathedral Hall from 9 a.m.—1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 with vendors offering jewelry, baked goods, white elephant sales, and a basket raffle— a soup/salad and dessert luncheon will begin at 10:30 a.m. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Marquette County Habitat for Humanity teamed with Rainy Creek Construction and GAF to provide a free new roof on its latest home build at 363 and 365 W Fairbanks St in Marquette. Rainy Creek donated all labor while GAF supplied the roof materials, and the project was completed in early October—helping keep building costs lower for partner families. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will hold its fall bazaar on Saturday, Nov. 8 from 10 a.m.—1 p.m. at 555 Riverside Road in Harvey, offering white elephant items, pies, sweet breads, crafts, and a tea table with all proceeds going to The Salvation Army. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Marquette County Habitat for Humanity held a rural housing rally on Sunday where local leaders and residents, including nonprofit founder Ryan Redmond, discussed barriers like rental history, criminal records, and credit issues + high construction costs that keep affordable housing out of reach. - ➤ The Peter White Public Library in Marquette is renaming its Winter Wonderland Walk to Evergreen event for the upcoming holiday season and will display winter-themed art in the Deo and Huron Mountain Club Galleries as well as decorated community trees. The library invites community participation with tree registration open until Nov. 7 and an Evening of Art and Evergreen reception scheduled for December 11 (artists may also submit winter art for the Pierce Holiday Village exhibit on Nov. 29). - ➤ NMU Choir held its first fall concert at St. Paul Episcopal Church on Sunday, mixing sacred music with a church organ and saxophone—featuring a new piece by local composer Brandon Nelson. Choir director Erin Colwitz said the blend of old and new sounds worked well and noted a large crowd was present. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Drivers in Michigan are paying an average of $3.08 per gallon for regular unleaded gas (up 29 cents from last week and above the national average of $3.05). In Upper Michigan, prices range from $2.84 per gallon in Iron County to $3.36 in Mackinac County. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Cameron Elementary School in Gladstone held its annual Halloween carnival on Sunday (with $5 admission covering mini-games, trunk-or-treating, a scavenger hunt and pumpkin sale) to fund its parent teacher organization. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Marquette — The state budget cut funding for the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program from $3.6 million to $2.4 million, but funds for sea lamprey control remain secure since lampricide treatments are funded separately. The DNR is accepting grant proposals until Nov. 1 and will prioritize core funding awards of up to $70,000 per project. The Mining Journal

- ➤ MARQUETTE – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is urging parents to follow safe sleep rules for babies during Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month. Studies show a sleep-related death happens every two to three days in Michigan and following these rules could lower infant deaths by 23.1%—experts say these steps can save lives. The Mining Journal
