COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Captain Jim Finkbeiner of the Marquette City Police Department advised parents, motorists, and kids to use crosswalks, stay in groups, and avoid dark houses for safe Halloween trick or treating. The Marquette Downtown Development Association will host its annual trick or treat event tomorrow (4-7 p.m.).  WZMQ 19
  • St. Joseph’s Parish in Ishpeming is hosting its 99th annual Fall Bazaar today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1889 Prairie Ave.—The event offers unique items including a white elephant sale and a soup luncheon at 11 a.m.  The Mining Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport announced that starting May 21, United Airlines will fly three times daily from Marquette to O’Hare on a Bombardier CRJ-550 aircraft. Airport manager David Erhart said the service is meant to give residents more flight options—connecting them to many domestic and international places.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Franklin Dohanyos showcased products from seven Michigan companies in a special edition of 'From Michigan, With Love' for holiday shoppers—featuring Detroit Can Company, Saffron and Salt, Sticky Be Socks, Holland Bowl Mill, Pinconning Cheese, Dearborn Brand, and Great Lakes Pot Pies—while the video streams live on TV6 until staff clip the story.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Electrification and tariffs are sparking new interest in domestic mining as Eagle Mine partners with Revex Technologies to build a plant that will treat old waste rock and recycle batteries and e-waste for needed metals—this project is set to create jobs and lower environmental harm—and offers a fresh direction for local mining communities.  The Mining Journal
  • Forsyth Forward opened its new office at 184 W. Flint Street in Gwinn on Wednesday—a ribbon-cutting marked the event with an open house and community celebration. The office will boost local business, promote sustainable tourism and support community development in Forsyth Township.  The Mining Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent clear October light made Park Cemetery look bright — the pond doubled the autumn colors. Bird watchers saw many long-tailed ducks and tree sparrows — experts say poor mountain ash crops may keep pine grosbeaks and evening grosbeaks in the area longer.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Police posts in Marquette are open today (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) for residents to drop off expired and unused prescription pills during National Drug Take Back Day, with only pills accepted (liquids, inhalers, patches and syringes are not taken).  Sunny 101.9
  • United Way of Marquette County said tax refunds will be delivered by direct deposit instead of by mail due to an executive order signed in March — this change aims to reduce theft and delays. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program advises residents to prepare early by opening a local checking account and confirming account details — direct deposits arrive in about 21 days compared to six weeks for paper refunds.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Marquette County is asking volunteer drivers to help seniors with medical trips through the RSVP Transportation Program. The program provides free rides for seniors who lack family support — ensuring they reach doctors and pharmacies for needed care.  The Mining Journal
  • Frontline Strong Together held a ribbon-cutting on Oct. 6 at 200 W. Washington St – the new Upper Peninsula Wellness Center offers therapy, peer support and specialized wellness programs for police, firefighters, EMS and other first responders and their families.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU lost game one to Michigan State Spartans 4-0. The Wildcats did not score on six power plays — the Spartans won with a game-winning goal by Porter Martone and will start game two tomorrow at 6:07 p.m. from Berry Events Center.  WZMQ 19
  • Sports analyst Dave Ellis previewed NMU’s hockey series against Michigan State, noting that the team had not lost two games when hosting the number one team in five seasons — a key fact from past games. He also previewed NMU’s football game against Michigan Tech scheduled for today — highlighting key players Jahi Wood and Dante Basanese.  Upper Michigan's Source
