COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The St. Christopher’s Harvest Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the church on Badger and Ontario streets in Marquette Township—attendees can join a basket raffle, country store, pie sale and pie social. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Dr. Stephen Grugin explained that a generous donation from the Ray & Peg Hirvonen Foundation helped start the build of the Peg Hirvonen Bandshell at Presque Isle Park as the campaign raised over $1.9 million of its $2.2 million goal by October 23. He said the bandshell will be largely completed in the coming month with landscaping finished next spring and its opening anticipated by late June. Sunny 101.9
- ➤ St. Vincent de Paul in Ishpeming is asking for donations of nonperishable foods and toiletries to help serve about 325 local families. Donations may be dropped off at the pantry on Mondays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. + Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. + at the thrift store Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Ishpeming Kwik Trip opened early Thursday at 5 a.m.—about 20 people lined up and the community welcomed the new store—marking the seventh location in the U.P. The store will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 12 when another Kwik Trip will open in Escanaba. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Northern Michigan University held its Indigenous Perspectives Symposium on Thursday afternoon when indigenous leaders, elders, staff, students and community members met at the Northern Center to share ideas on traditional harvesting, sustainable land stewardship and food sovereignty with a focus on wild rice—attendees participated in workshops, panels and a communal luncheon that deepened their understanding of food and cultural identity. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy announced free testing for manganese, iron, copper, and zinc in private wells and public water supplies in Marquette and Gogebic counties, with sample results explained to residents. - ➤ The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said that the USDA Food and Nutrition Service instructed them to pause November SNAP benefits until further notice. - ➤ CAAM board announced that early childhood education services, including Head Start and Great Start, will end on November 14 due to the government shutdown—layoffs have affected staff. - ➤ UP Cross Country Coaches Association announced its All-State teams and individual honors for boys and girls in divisions 1, 2, and 3 from schools in local communities—including teams from Marquette, Sault Ste.
