- ➤ Corey and Meg Engelhart took charge of The Shipping Shop when they assumed new ownership on June 3 and marked the change with a ceremony on Oct. 6 hosted by the Lake Superior Community Partnership. The shop has added services like printing, notarization, laminating and binding while future plans include an app to help hotels and Airbnb hosts with lost-and-found items—keeping it a trusted resource at 1471 W. - ➤ Meditate Marquette is offering a four-week workshop series on a compassionate and integrative approach to managing intense emotions—sessions are held 6—7:30 p.m. on four consecutive Wednesdays starting Oct. 29 in the Lions room of the Peter White Public Library. The workshop is offered for donation, with a suggested range of $60 to $120, and is led by mindfulness meditation teacher and psychologist Dr. Debra Smith. The Mining Journal
- ➤ The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity announced that building trades apprenticeships will earn college credits for associate degrees or technical certificates for past, current, and future participants. - ➤ UP farms are preparing for winter as fall winds down at Michigan State University Extension South Farm, where director James DeDecker said projects such as drying grains and moving crops like garlic & onions require ideal conditions before winter. - ➤ Marquette residents can drop off old electronics this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Municipal Service Center at 1100 Wright St.—the event, organized by the Superior Watershed Partnership with the Great Lakes Climate Corps and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, accepts most consumer electronics for a $5 fee to help reduce water quality and health risks. - ➤ Ten tribal nations have filed a brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to shut down Line 5, a pipeline project at the center of a legal fight after a lawsuit by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. - ➤ NMU Center for Rural Health invites UP high school seniors to join an essay contest that asks them to write 500–1,000 words on two community health issues and offer new solutions.
