COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Due to ongoing construction in Tourist Park Day Use area, the off-leash dog park's opening has been delayed until November 15th—starting October 20th, the Power Mill Road entrance to the Tourist Park Campground is closed to all traffic for public safety. To make up for the delay, the dog park season will extend through May 10th.  The Mining Journal
  • Downtown Marquette streets will close on Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. for Halloween events hosted by the Queen City Running Company and the Downtown Development Authority, including a Trick or Trot starting at 3:30 p.m.—motorists should plan alternate routes.  The Mining Journal
  • Pamela Christensen received the Evergreen Award from the Marquette Zonta Club for her outstanding mentoring of women and girls and her service that has improved our community. The Marquette Harbor Rotary praised her for her creativity and initiative—marking her win as a well deserved honor.  The Mining Journal
  • Marquette's American Legion post at 700 W. Bluff St. will host a fish fry this Friday from 4:30-6:30 p.m., offering white fish and shrimp for $13 or chicken strips for $10 with a side of baked potato or french fries plus cole slaw—customers can call in for takeout at 906-225-0781 starting at 3:30 p.m. and enjoy a bake sale hosted by the Legion Auxiliary.  The Mining Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday, a driver struck and killed a lineman on M-553, and highway officials urged drivers to stay alert and follow road rules—reminding everyone that some automatic braking systems are not always reliable.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Griffin Family Cafe & Catering in Hancock will reopen at its new Quincy Street location on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—the event will include prizes, refreshments, and a tour. Owner Kelly Griffin said community support helped cover most of the cost for a new griddle hood after a challenging period.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educators are concerned after $19.4M was cut from Michigan Great Start funds, which led to job losses including the layoff of Joseph Mold’s wife in Delta County—local officials in Marquette/Alger secured temporary support until December. Sen. Ed McBroom explained that while the cut targeted door-to-door recruitment efforts, Great Start received an overall increase of $28.5M and many now face uncertainty over long-term funding.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Northern Michigan University School of Clinical Sciences and Nursing will host Open Lab Day 2025 on Tuesday, Oct 28 — about 200 high school students from the UP will try x-rays on a phantom doll and take hearing tests at a speech clinic.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Superior Watershed Partnership is hosting an e-waste collection on Saturday at Marquette’s Municipal Service Center where residents can drop off old phones, computers, tablets, TVs, and DVD players from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — each carload is charged $5 to cover recycling costs.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • A team of two dozen volunteers cleaned up Silver Lead Creek near K.I. Sawyer on Oct. 18th—removing trash from the stream and trail—and the project was supported by local groups and Forsyth Township at no cost.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan State Police are promoting Operation Safe Stop to teach drivers safe habits and enforce traffic laws near school buses. Marquette City Police and local schools are working together to remind drivers to give buses extra room and keep children safe as officers increase patrols in residential areas this week.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Dr. Abdul El-Sayed began his Open Our Health Care tour today in Marquette to address rising medical costs and explain his plans to expand Medicare and stop hospital mergers — he noted that local residents appreciated his focus on removing corporate money from politics. The candidate will head to Houghton tomorrow to meet Michigan Tech students and faculty.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Up North Advocacy in Sault St. Marie has broadened its Men’s Circles program to help men talk about mental health through weekend bonfire sessions and six follow-up meetings—planning to reach more men across the U.P. in the future.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette caregivers can join a free three-part Dementia Caregiving Series online via Zoom, held from 11 a.m.—noon on Dec. 3, 10 and 17 that teaches basic dementia care and self-care tips; registration ends Nov. 21.  The Mining Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Northern Michigan wrestler Payton Jacobson earned the program's first U23 world bronze medal in the 87 kg class at Novi Sad, Serbia on October 21—overcoming a 9-0 setback in the semifinals—by defeating Lachin Valiyev 5–3 in the bronze medal match.  WZMQ 19
