COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A nearly mile-long line of 'No Kings' protesters marched on US-41 from the Holiday Inn to Comfort Suites in Marquette Saturday morning—organizers asked for donations of food and cleaning supplies to aid local pantries amid the government shutdown.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Mike Tarr, who spent 26 years in the military, was named Marquette County Veteran of the Year by the Marquette County Veterans Alliance—he also supports groups like Wish For Our Heroes and Walk Among Heroes that aid service members.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Marquette Regional History Center held its 13th Archaeology Fair where community members of all ages celebrated International Archaeology Day with a scavenger hunt and hands-on activities. Kids dug in a sandbox to learn how people lived long ago and watched a Viking food demo as part of the interactive experience.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette art galleries on Third, Washington and Front Streets hosted special demos and displays during a biannual art tour last Saturday — an event that highlighted local talent. Zero Degrees Gallery showcased work by 42 artists — and Sandy Weber noted the city’s strong arts culture inspired by its scenic backdrop.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • 37-year-old Dan Shirley from Philly raced his car 'War Weasel' at the Lake Superior Performance Rally in Ishpeming. He spent nearly $40,000 to build and upgrade the car and worked with co-driver Stirling Fazio to overcome suspension issues — they aimed to improve their pace on the course.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Northern Michigan University set a program record by rushing for 538 yards in its 42-21 win over the Roosevelt Lakers on Saturday afternoon. Running backs Dobert (243 yards) and Wood (233 yards) scored touchdowns and led the team as they prepare to face Michigan Tech in the Miner’s Cup on Oct 25.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU volleyball swept the Ashland Eagles in a 3—0 win on Saturday—25—19, 25—21, and 25—13—with Madison York scoring a career-high 15 kills. The team will host Grand Valley State and Wayne State next week as they improved to an 8—11 record.  WZMQ 19
