COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pam Christensen was awarded the Zonta Club’s Evergreen Award on Monday for her work mentoring women and improving community life in Marquette — the Marquette Harbor Rotary praised her for helping women reach their leadership potential through excellence and creativity. Her award recognized over a decade of dedicated volunteer service that has positively impacted many in the community.  The Mining Journal
  • The Laughing Whitefish Bird Alliance will host a program at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library in Marquette—15-year veteran Seney National Park Ranger Jennifer Wycoff will give a short overview of Seney Refuge—followed by a Jeopardy game led by local naturalist Steve Waller.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marquette Regional History Center is hosting its 13th annual Archaeology Fair today from 11 a.m.—3 p.m. The event features indoor and outdoor booths with hands-on displays and activities while admission costs range from $3 to $10 with discounts for students and EBT card holders.  The Mining Journal
  • DeVos Art Museum invited artists from around the U.S. to display digital works in an exhibit that explores resistance and reimagination. Alabama-based artist Shori Sims said she experienced turning points — a dead bird marked a significant moment for her work, and the show runs through December 15.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • At 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, the Marquette Regional History Center will host Here Comes the Wizard Oil Wagon: Senior Support Series to explore late-19th century traveling medicine shows with free music, humorous skits, antique medical displays, door prizes, and complimentary Dead River Coffee—presented by local history buff Bill Van Kosky.  The Mining Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Economic Club of Marquette County will hold a meeting on Monday, Oct. 20 featuring speakers Andrea and Wes Pernsteiner from Ore Dock Brewing Co.—registration closed on Friday, Oct. 17 with non-members paying $75.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University officials will begin the Spartan Bus Tour on Sunday, Oct. 19 to visit 15 stops throughout Upper Michigan—reaching as far north as L’Anse—to learn about local priorities in health, sustainability, education and economic opportunity.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Bay College celebrated the impact of scholarships on Friday morning (Building Tomorrow Together) at its Escanaba campus, where $650,000 in awards were given to 330 students during the 2024-2025 academic year. Nursing student Lara Ryan said the community support helped her continue her studies (showing that anyone can dream and start life at any age).  WZMQ 19

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan DNR warned that fall is a peak time for dangerous moose collisions in the Upper Peninsula—about one third of all moose deaths happen in September and October. The agency said several highway stretches have seen frequent crashes as moose shift south and urged drivers to be cautious.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marquette Board of Light and Power reported that nearly 3,000 customers lost power Thursday morning as crews were sent to investigate the outage that left about 16% of its customers without service—this marks the second outage in two months following a September 15 event.  The Mining Journal
  • The Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority is reviewing permit applications for Enbridge’s Line 5 project, which will replace the current pipeline with a four‑mile underground tunnel with a one‑foot-thick concrete liner—updates were given by MDOT, EGLE and the Army Corps of Engineers on Friday. The Michigan Supreme Court will hear appeals from a September lawsuit with briefs due Nov 14, while the authority prepares to oversee construction if permits are approved.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The National Active and Retired Federal Employees chapter 1900 will meet by Zoom at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22nd—chapter members will get the Zoom link by email and non-members can email [email protected] to request access.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Community members, educators and professionals will meet on Oct. 30 at Marquette-Alger RESA from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to create a 90-day plan aimed at boosting mental, physical and social wellness in the U.P.—this includes screening for depression in schools and introducing new activities for seniors.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • On Friday night at Berry Events Center, the Colorado College Tigers beat NMU hockey 2-1 in overtime—Ryan Koering scored the game-winner at 1:51 after NMU led 1-0 and freshman goalie Oliver Auyeung-Ashton made 43 saves from 45 shots.  WZMQ 19
