COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NEGAUNEE — The Negaunee VFW Post #3165 will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser at 4:30 p.m. on October 25 at the VFW Post Hall on 208 Gold St to raise money for Negaunee Middle School eighth graders' spring trip to Washington, D.C. A suggested donation of $15 will cover spaghetti with homemade meat sauce, garlic bread, salad and dessert.  The Mining Journal
  • The Knights of Columbus council donated over $1,100 to Bay Cliff Health Camp during a recent fundraiser—using funds raised from local recycling efforts and Tootsie Rolls handouts—to help the camp continue offering therapy and lasting memories for special-needs children, Dr. Lutgen said.  The Mining Journal
  • Fox Marquette Subaru is donating $4,000 this October through the #SubaruLovesPets initiative to help adult dogs and cats find homes with UPAWS in Gwinn, where adoption fees (covering spay/neuter, vaccines and microchips) will be paid until funds run out and small animals and fish can be adopted for free.  The Mining Journal

  • Able Medical Devices opened its new manufacturing facility at 2980 M-533 in Marquette that constructs medical implants, surgical instruments and orthopedic devices—The company projects adding about 40 jobs over the next three years and has partnered with local colleges to provide CNC training.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • Snowbound Books will hold its S’Booky Pop-Up event at Ore Dock Brewing Co. on October 23 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.—the event features horror books, costume contests with prizes, and card games and demos from Iron Golem Games that welcome both adults and kids.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The 2025 Fresh Coast Film Festival is happening today through Sunday in Marquette—showing documentary films on outdoor lifestyle and the Great Lakes spirit as organizers invite volunteers to help out.  Sunny 101.9
  • Travel Marquette has launched the new Marquette History Pass, a free mobile guide that connects visitors with over 20 historic sites sharing the region’s mining, maritime, and cultural stories. The pass joins local Halloween events—haunted hayrides starting today, a cookie decorating event on October 18th, and a costume race on October 25—that offer a unique way to explore Marquette’s heritage.  The Mining Journal
  • The Stand U.P. Comedy Festival will be held at Ore Dock Brewing Co. from November 5-8 with four nights of stand-up comedy featuring top national and local comics. Tickets for adults 18 and older are now available online—on sale now.  Sunny 101.9
  • Michigan Tech University’s revamped Copper Country Historical Images database earned a state award for its historical preservation work—using web map-based tools to help users locate thousands of photos that document over two centuries of life on the Keweenaw Peninsula. The project took over a year and a half to complete and involved library staff and students, including senior Grace Murray who mapped 2,000 images.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Scott Beaulier, one of four presidential candidates at NMU, has drawn criticism after his published views on government assistance and low-income behavior sparked concern among community members—many of whom fear his ideas may harm students from diverse backgrounds. The NMU Board of Trustees will name the next president in the coming days, prompting calls for careful review of his record.  The North Wind

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Marquette Board of Light and Power is urging customers to switch to paperless billing by December 1 so they can enter a contest to win a free month of power on their January bill, with credits capped at $100 for three winners. About 70% of customers still receive paper bills, and switching saves money and paper — a benefit the board hopes will boost participation.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • U.P. Health System Marquette hosted an open house this week for Breast Cancer Awareness Month to let people meet medical staff and learn about cancer screening (including free Q&A sessions and tours). Doctors stressed that regular mammograms (a simple way to catch breast cancer early) can save lives.  WZMQ 19
