- ➤ American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44 held its fourth annual Veteran Basket Program fundraiser on Thursday at Post 44 to raise funds for personalized gift baskets that will be delivered to veterans on Nov. 11. Fifty raffle baskets were available—and dinner was served on a donation basis—as organizers hope to exceed last year's total. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ The St. Christopher’s Harvest Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. — 1 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the corner of Badger and Ontario streets, featuring a basket raffle, county store, pie sale and pie social. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and Memory Care hosted its second Making Memories Chili Cookoff on Thursday afternoon, where residents’ staff and family competed with eight chili batches judged by Marquette City police — Negaunee Township firefighters and Mayor Jessica Hanley. - ➤ Marquette will host the Fresh Coast Film Festival ’25 next week with a free film showcase event starting on Thursday, October 16 at Mattson Lower Harbor park— the festival will run through Sunday the 19 and include documentaries about the outdoor lifestyle and Great Lakes spirit. Sunny 101.9
- ➤ Negaunee students attended a Thursday performance by Beethoven and Banjos as part of NMU’s Siril Concert Series where they heard music from different parts of the world — including pieces from Iceland. - ➤ Visitors enjoyed the historic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile in Negaunee Thursday, and the vehicle will come to Marquette today at Super One Foods from 12 to 5 p.m. eastern — it will then visit Marquette Mountain Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the U.P. - ➤ Scott Beaulier, the fourth candidate for NMU president, visited campus Thursday. He is the Dean of Business at the University of Wyoming and grew up in Kingsford—graduated from NMU in 2000 with a degree in history and economics—and he said his priorities include gratitude and community leadership as the board interviews all candidates next week. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bird watchers in Marquette have seen many ducks and trumpeter swans as fall weather draws migrating birds from across the region—local reports include redhead ducks in the Lower Harbor and swans at Tourist Park Lake. Other birders have noted a lively mix of species at Presque Isle Park as autumn deepens. The Mining Journal
- ➤ The state’s Natural Resources Commission presented survey results at a meeting in Houghton Thursday, showing that the core moose population declined from 426 to 300—with the low-density area dropping from 143 to 43. The DNR and partners from Northern Michigan University and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community secured $684,000 for a research project that will monitor moose behavior and investigate changes in their habitat.
