COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UPAWS is turning 50 and will host an anniversary celebration this Sunday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.—the event will offer snacks, cake, mementos, door prizes for the first 100 guests, and a shelter open house for facility tours.  Upper Michigan's Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A long-standing shipping shop in Marquette held its ribbon cutting today and reopened under new management with help from the Lake Superior Community Partnership. Owner Corey Englehart said he has been working since June—adding new products and services to meet local shipping needs.  WZMQ 19

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Luova Art Fest returns to Marquette this weekend at Crib Coffee House—offering a three-day event with live music and visual art from local artists and featuring seven bands along with increased awards for artists, according to event director Emma Schramm.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette foodies enjoyed a six course BrewFeast at Ore Dock Brewing Co. Tuesday evening where dishes like Korean pulled pork and chorizo pupusas were paired with brews—Northern Michigan University culinary students served 50 guests as part of an event hosted by the American Culinary Federation Upper Michigan Chapter with all proceeds funding free membership for NMU culinary students.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Nerds of Marquette are hosting the Zombie Pub Crawl and Horrorball 2025 this Saturday in Marquette. Attendees will meet at Kognisjon Bryggeri on North Third Street at 4:00 p.m.—then move to Ore Dock Brewing Co before the Halloween dance party starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Marquette Commons.  Sunny 101.9
  • Last Friday, Marquette residents celebrated Plaidurday at the Ore Dock Brewery where hundreds gathered for the annual group photo—this unique holiday began 15 years ago when local entrepreneur Bugsy Sailor, teased for his plaid wardrobe, turned the playful remark into a lasting tradition. The event drew participants from Houghton and Ironwood and highlighted the town’s creative spirit.  WZMQ 19

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lake Superior Community Partnership was chosen as one of ten organizations for Michigan’s Community Growth Academy—an 18-month program that supports local economic change in Marquette and Delta counties. The partnership will receive technical help, grant access, and a full-time fellow to test the state’s transition playbook before its statewide release next year.  WZMQ 19

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After Gov. Whitmer signed the state budget Tuesday, UP library directors said there will not be any disruptions to services—new funding will support online resources, programs, and interlibrary loans.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer signed the 2026 state budget today after contentious talks last week, which added a 24 percent wholesale tax on cannabis but did not include $50 million for the Copperwood Mine. The $81 billion plan allocates $14.1 billion to the general fund and increases U.P. school funding to $10,050 per student—5 percent higher than last year to help with aging infrastructure.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • This weekend, members of the Marquette County Amateur Radio Emergency Service will join forces with the county to install a permanent high frequency antenna system that will improve emergency readiness during winter outages — officials will test the system in various scenarios afterward.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • Frontline Strong Together opened its first in-person wellness center in Marquette on Monday afternoon to help first responders manage stress and access free peer counseling. The center offers free support including therapy sessions and anonymous meetings on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. in Suite 500 of the old City Hall building — this is part of a 24/7 program available to responders across Michigan’s 83 counties.  WZMQ 19
  • A walk to raise awareness for epilepsy will be held at Superior Dome on NMU's campus Sunday (9 a.m. until noon) with all proceeds going to the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan. A community seizure awareness and first aid training will be offered Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Peninsula II Room at the Northern Center on NMU’s campus.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Wildcats players met this weekend at NMU to mark 50 years since their big win in 1975 when they turned a bad season into a championship by beating Western Kentucky 16 to 14. Former running back Kurt Albrech said making the playoffs felt very surprising and strange—linking that win with the energy of today's team.  The Mining Journal
  • Upper Peninsula high school football polls show the Eskymos retook first place in the 11-player poll by earning a two-vote edge over the Maroons as both teams remain 6-0. In the eight-player poll, Newberry dropped from a tie for fifth to join the group of teams receiving votes—Norway stayed at the top with a unanimous score.  The Mining Journal
