COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, a fall color tour at the northernmost Sugarloaf parking lot on Marquette County Road 550 will run from noon to 2:30 p.m. The guided tour features a rugged uphill hike to the Sugarloaf summit led by MooseWood volunteer and forester Sean Fischer—participants should wear proper gear and note that the trail is not handicapped-accessible.  The Mining Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Finlandia Foundation National Lake Superior Chapter is hosting a classical violin concert by Charlotte Loukola at LoveMarq Church at 728 W. Kaye Ave on Sunday at 2 p.m.—the performance features traditional Finnish folk melodies that promote cultural connection while admission is free with donations benefiting the church and a food drive.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gasoline prices in Michigan have risen 8.4 cents per gallon in the past week to $3.06 per gallon today—GasBuddy’s survey of 4,913 stations shows prices are 8.3 cents lower than last month and 24.9 cents below last year.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Westwood High School received four snowmobiles from Rep. Jack Bergman on Monday after he promised them eight months ago for the school's CTE program—teachers plan to set up practice stations soon so students can learn maintenance and diagnostic skills with the new equipment.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Chris Olsen, the NMU Presidential candidate and Indiana State provost, visited campus Monday night in Marquette to join a community reception. The final candidate will host a reception October 9 at the University Center from 5—7 p.m. to share more NMU plans.  Upper Michigan's Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport has nearly secured $3 million from the new state budget — airport officials worked with LSCP and Rep. Karl Bohnak to address local infrastructure needs. Airport Manager David Erhart said the funds are not tied to specific projects such as the air traffic control tower or boarding bridges — the allocation is for general improvements.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Ishpeming City Fire Department has been awarded $900,000 to replace its 30-year-old pumper truck with a new one that holds 1,000 gallons of water (an upgrade from the old 750-gallon capacity). Fire Chief Jason Annala said the new truck will offer higher reliability in rural areas with frozen hydrants (reducing the need for frequent repairs).  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Living Well Chiropractic + Acupuncture is hosting three free family events this month in Marquette, including an outdoor movie night showing Madagascar at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, a workshop on healthy kids on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 6 to 7 p.m., and a Perfect Storm Workshop on Oct. 20 to explain neurological chiropractic care; registration is required by phone or via social media.  Upper Michigan's Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • NMU Wildcats goalie William Gramme set a new program record with 65 saves in a 5-3 loss to UMass—he also broke the single-period record with 34 stops as UMass scored the empty net goal with ten seconds left.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech football team improved its record with a 48 to 24 win against Wayne State on a hot Saturday afternoon in October, posting season-high offensive stats and shutting out their opponent in the second half. The team now stands at 4—1 overall and will face Davenport next Saturday at 2 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Wildcat women swam today at the PEIF Pool, winning all eight events and scoring 501 points to outpace the Huskies, Panthers and Lakers (393, 245 and 17 points respectively). Key athletes (Wright, Burda and Ceglinski) claimed multiple wins and helped the team sweep four podiums.  WZMQ 19
  • Saginaw Valley State beat Northern Michigan 47—25 at Wickes Stadium on Saturday as the Cardinals built a 26-point lead in the second quarter that the Wildcats could not overcome. NMU recorded 289 rushing yards while SVSU balanced its attack with both ground and passing plays.  WZMQ 19
  • NMU men’s soccer team blanked the St. Cloud State Huskies 2-0 on the road today—Rosen scored a penalty and Weimer headed in the second goal, giving the Wildcats their fourth shutout as they prepare for Friday’s game.  WZMQ 19
