- ➤ Grow and Lead and Connect Marquette will host their 20th Anniversary Connect and Grow Conference at Northern Michigan University’s Northern Center from October 15 through 17—October 15 for a pre-conference event and October 16 and 17 for nonprofit networking and career development. Amy Quinn said the event will offer professionals across the U.P. a chance to boost their skills. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Marquette City Fire Marshall Jeff Fossitt and Amber Talo of ServPro announced that a static display with fire trucks and a parade is happening today at 11:00 a.m. at Harlow Park — Fire Prevention Week will begin tomorrow with fire safety information and prizes available. Sunny 101.9
- ➤ LSCP Foundation’s Housing Now program held a community meeting in Marquette Township Friday where leaders and residents discussed housing trends and zoning reform—one of eight focus areas to address the housing crisis. - ➤ Two brothers sailing from Shot Point to Lower Harbor had their sailboat capsize when a gust of wind hit and they used a cell phone in a dry bag to call 911—one was taken to shore while the boat owner stayed with deputies to tow the vessel back. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Plaidurday was celebrated Friday at NMU as about 200 people gathered at the Wildcat statue in plaid outfits—founder Bugsy Sailor said the event grew despite record heat. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ On Thursday afternoon, the Marquette Regional History Center and MSU Extension held a forest forensics hike in Old Towne—led by educator Anna Ellis, who explained how clues in nature, like a sugar maple estimated to be 150 to 200 years old, reveal the area’s history and mining roots. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Michigan lawmakers passed an $81 billion budget at 4 a.m. Friday that boosts education funding with a record $10,050 per-pupil foundation allowance and secures a long-term road plan; the measure provides $3 million for upgrades at Sawyer International Airport in Marquette County—while it removes a $50 million grant for Copperwood Mine infrastructure. Gov. Whitmer is expected to sign the budget in the coming days. WZMQ 19

- ➤ On October 3, the Superior Health Foundation announced its fall programs in Marquette during Mark & Walt in the Morning, noting that its recent Fall Gala Celebration benefited Trillium House & Beacon House and that its Paint the Peninsula Pink breast cancer fundraiser is underway this month. - ➤ Frontline Strong Together opened the Upper Peninsula Wellness Center for first responders and their families on October 3rd in Marquette — the center is located in Suite 500 at the old City Hall on Washington Street and is the first facility designed to address the stress and invisible injuries of first responder work. - ➤ The NMU women’s swim and dive team finished first in every event at the season opener at the PEIF Pool in Marquette today—scoring 830 points and capturing 27 podium finishes, with standout efforts by Evie DeCarlo and her teammates. They will face the same competitors again tomorrow at 10 a.m. as the meet continues. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Today NMU men's swimming and diving team dominated the quadrangular meet at the PEIF Pool—winning 11 of 13 events and earning 746 points against competitors from Northern Michigan, St. Cloud State, Davenport and Lake Superior State. Standout swimmers Will LaCount and Jef Leroux led the team as they prepare to compete again tomorrow at 10 a.m. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Today in a dramatic game — the Wildcats rallied in the final ten minutes with two goals by Kastamo to secure a 2-1 win over Ferris State at the NMU Soccer Field. The team will face Saginaw Valley on Sunday at noon in an important GLIAC match. WZMQ 19
