- ➤ On November 1, trade unionists, family and friends will gather at NMU to induct labor leaders Tom Hogan & Don Maki into the U.P. Labor Hall of Fame. The event will start at 5 p.m. with a display at the Hall and then move to the Northern Center ballrooms at 6 p.m. with tickets priced at $65 per person. The Mining Journal

- ➤ The Michigan State Police and NMU Cold Case Program worked on the 44-year-old case of Helen Dymond after she disappeared on June 28, 1981 when her granddaughter Holly Letson met with students last Thursday morning—new information is expected to help lead the investigation. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Jeffrey Biegel, a pianist from New York City, will open the Marquette Symphony Orchestra's new season tomorrow by playing George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue at Kaufman Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. MSO musicians will also perform two jazzy pieces with local high school string students — marking Biegel’s first visit to the Upper Peninsula. - ➤ On Tuesday, Sept. 30, the Well-Being team at Jamrich set up a table with study packets, stickers, and mints to help students learn time management and beat test anxiety. - ➤ Today, Michigan State Police and NMU hosted an open house to show how NMU's Criminal Justice Department collaborates on the cold case of Helen Dymond from National Mine—students are actively gaining experience by investigating the real case from 1981. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Members of NMU's Student Leader Fellowship Program learned to spot misinformation and disinformation at a Skill Builder Workshop hosted by Gwen Feamster on Sept. 29—students were taught to check authors’ qualifications and identify AI-generated images for better news engagement. The North Wind
- ➤ Ronald Hendrick, a Michigan native and current provost and senior vice president at Texas Tech University, spoke last Thursday on campus during NMU’s presidential search—he said he is eager to build on the university’s strengths. - ➤ On Thursday, the Lake Superior Community Partnership hosted a roundtable at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport where officials said the passenger numbers had increased and more flights are planned, including a proposed morning flight to Detroit. Airport Manager David Erhart said the airport also aims to add a direct flight from Dallas in the future+community support will help keep air travel growing. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ Marquette County’s Chief Assistant Prosecutor Jill Bable told state lawmakers that Michigan’s CPS is failing UP children — leaving them in unsafe homes and with fewer foster care options. She asked for more pay for foster families, a quick police emergency line for CPS, and clear accountability for how cases are handled. WZMQ 19

- ➤ On Tuesday, Jeffers boys won the Negaunee Invitational with 42 points — Cameron Anderson finished first in the boys race while Henry Plummer led Negaunee with a strong second-place finish. In the girls race, Keira Waterman earned the individual title in 20:38.9 — her performance helped her team win the Mid-Peninsula Conference championship with near-perfect 16 points.
