COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Plaidurday, the annual celebration of plaid, will take place tomorrow in Marquette—residents are invited to join regional events by wearing plaid. Bugsy Sailor, the event's ambassador, said community members can share photos on social media using plaidurday as their tag.  Sunny 101.9
  • Marquette City Fire Department is promoting Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 5-11, themed 'Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,' to teach residents safe buying, charging and recycling practices for lithium-ion batteries. The department will host a Firetruck Static Display at 11 a.m. Saturday—parade to follow at 12:30 p.m. with a rain date of Oct. 11.  The Mining Journal
  • Fox Marquette Subaru is donating $4,000 in October to cover adoption fees for adult cats and dogs one year and older while teaming up with UPAWS, which is offering free adoptions for small critters—appointments are required and the offer will end when the donation is used up.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Marquette Symphony Orchestra will kick off the 2025-26 season with a concert at Kaufman Auditorium on Saturday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m.—opening with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and featuring two jazz pieces by Shostakovich with local high school string students and renowned pianist Jeffery Biegel. Following the concert, Biegel will perform a solo piano show at Reynolds Recital Hall on Sunday at 2 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette Fringe will present their annual Fall Phantasm event this Saturday with the theme Chrysalis; the free all-ages event runs from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Lakenenland Sculpture Park on M-28 in Chocolay Township — a shuttle bus from Ojibwa Casino parking lot will run since on-site parking is not allowed.  Sunny 101.9
  • Visitors including influencer Taylor Hildreth and retired educator Mae Paluck flew on an Isle Royale Seaplanes tour to see fall colors over the U.P.—the tours run until Tuesday the 14th with no flights on the 6th and 7th.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Beethoven and Banjos Festival returns in October as an event blending classical and folk music inspired by Iceland. The festival, now in its 11th-season, features international and local artists performing in Marquette on Oct.-10 at Reynolds Recital Hall, in Rhinelander on Oct.-11 at Nicolet College Theatre, and in Crystal Falls on Oct.-12 at Crystal Theatre.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School leaders and law enforcement are working to keep students safe by adding cameras, locking outside doors, and having trained officers on duty. Lawmakers passed a law that will require schools to form a threat assessment team by October 2026 — a measure aimed at quickly handling any safety issues.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • First Tee launched a program in the Upper Peninsula on October 1 to teach local youth golf and life skills like leadership and self-confidence—Kenn Hruska said the course builds character and resilience to overcome challenges.  Sunny 101.9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 2025 deer hunting archery season began Wednesday in the U.P. as DNR officials reported low deer numbers along Lake Superior. Outdoor retailers say higher than usual temperatures may reduce hunter turnout, and new limits on antlerless hunting intend to protect deer—DNR testing for Chronic Wasting Disease is available in several counties and the season will end Nov. 14.  Upper Michigan's Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • YesRx has received a Community Health Pilot grant from the Superior Health Foundation to help cancer patients in Marquette and the Upper Peninsula—its program collects unused donated medications to ease high treatment costs and reduce waste.  The Mining Journal
