COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A congregation from Azania Front in Tanzania toured Bay Cliff Health Camp’s facilities on Friday afternoon in Big Bay—an arrangement by Messiah Lutheran that welcomed a group engaged in community outreach. They will depart today and return to Dar es Salaam later this week.  The Mining Journal

  • The Lake Superior Community Partnership invites nominations for outstanding small businesses in Marquette County for its Small Business Celebration—five awards will be presented at the Mather Inn in Ishpeming on Nov 6 and nominations end Oct 6.  Upper Michigan's Source

CRIME NEWS

  • Marquette seniors are targeted by a new Medicare fraud scam that adds false charges for unnecessary equipment like diabetic supplies and braces on their statements—fraudsters use stolen personal information for gain. The Marquette Senior Center and police advise seniors to check their Medicare bills carefully and report any suspicious activity by calling 1-800-MEDICARE.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday morning at the Northern Waters Casino Resort in Watersmeet, the Lac Vieux Desert Remembrance Walk kicked off as tribe members Bob Hazen and Linda Cobe shared their painful experiences at Native American boarding schools—stories that reveal how forced assimilation sought to erase native culture. Their accounts help the community acknowledge a difficult past and take steps toward healing.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The 13th annual Archaeology Fair will take place at Marquette Regional History Center on October 18th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—you can join a scavenger hunt and explore 15 booths to learn about human history.  Upper Michigan's Source

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Michigan Community & Worker Economic Transition Office chose 10 groups to join an 18-month Community Growth Academy that will help areas hurt by shifts in the auto and utility sectors plan for long-term growth. The program offers technical help + grant funding and fellowship support and includes Lake Superior Community Partnership from Marquette.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • School administrators in the UP are keeping student safety as a top priority amid rising national trends of school shootings, suicidal thoughts, and weapon carriage. Gladstone High principal Andrew Jacques said they practice drills and get to know every student—steps that help keep schools safe locally.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Upper Peninsula Publishers and Authors Association has opened the ninth Dandelion Cottage Short Story Contest for teachers to submit student stories from the region. Teachers can enter unlimited submissions with entries accepted in two grade categories until Jan. 31, 2026 — winners will earn cash prizes and have their work featured in U.P. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County Land Bank Authority held its first developer workshop Tuesday to help local developers with grant applications and bank choices - Housing Specialist Antonio Adan said the session addressed the need for more lower and middle-income housing and that another workshop is planned for October.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette City Commission changed the plan for the old hospital at 420 W. Magnetic St.—the change shifts funds to build parking with lower costs by about $5 million. City Manager Karen Kovacs will draft a deal that sets up a 15-year plan for TIF reimbursements, to be reviewed later.  The Mining Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts say that making exercise fun and eating a colorful, healthy diet can help prevent child obesity. Todd Poquette urged families to use outdoor play to build healthy habits while Dr. Novak advised including children in meal preparation to promote a balanced lifestyle.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • A new mental health and wellness resource program named Front Line Strong Together will open next week in Marquette to support EMS, Dispatch, Law Enforcement, Corrections, and Fire workers and their families at the old City Hall building. The ribbon-cutting is set for October 6th at 3 p.m.—organized by Peer Support Specialist Susan Andary to help ease the high stress of these roles.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • NMU cross country senior Madi Szymanski earned her second straight GLIAC Athlete of the Week after finishing 9th at the Lucian Rosa Invite—her season-best time of 21:37.1 helped NMU secure a 4th-place team finish against nationally ranked teams.  WZMQ 19
