COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Getzloff Corn Maze in Wilson has opened for its 17th season—featuring nearly 11-foot tall corn and a maze design that honors Pink Pumpkin—and also offers a hidden game for visitors. Guests can enjoy fall activities and a hay ride through 40 acres of hardwood—admission is $8 for ages 5 and older—with operating hours on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  WZMQ 19
  • The Ishpeming Senior Center is hosting a Walk to End Alzheimer’s today—participants register at 9:00 a.m. at the center to begin the walk along the nearby Iron Ore Heritage Trail with snacks and raffle prizes following the event. A similar walk is planned in Marquette on Saturday at the same time.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette will host its annual Fire Prevention Week events with a static display of fire trucks at Harlow Park on October 4 at 11:00 a.m.—if the weather is bad, the display will move to October 11. Fire Prevention Week begins on October 5 with prizes for kids and fire safety information.  Sunny 101.9

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Northern Michigan University Department of Theatre & Dance presents Into The Woods at the Forest Roberts Theatre on campus this week and next — performances are at 7:30 p.m. with a Saturday 1:00 p.m. matinee. Tickets can be bought as the show continues its run.  Sunny 101.9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NMU Board of Trustees met on Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. to start with a moment of silence for fallen students and review key issues including the cold case program, childcare, campus resources, and the search for a new president — student representatives and committee reports also detailed updates on budgets and academic matters. The meeting provided a chance for everyone at NMU to review ongoing plans and future fiscal strategies to better serve students and staff.  The North Wind
  • Marquette Senior High School inducted retired professor Stephen L. DesJardins and musician Dan Trudell onto its A. Felch Pendill Wall of Excellence on September 25. Trudell said he felt proud and will perform at Blackrocks Brewery Saturday from 3:30 to 6 while DesJardins could not attend because he is busy conducting research in Europe—his parents attended in his honor.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU met Wednesday with student groups to announce that the school will stop using internal funds for many DEI events because Federal mandates risk losing key student aid and research grants—students are advised to seek external funding to keep events going. University officials said they are working with legal teams and will provide updated guidelines to help maintain compliance.  The North Wind

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • As waterfowl hunting season begins, the Michigan Invasive Species Program reminds hunters to clean, drain, and dry their equipment—measures meant to stop invasive species like Hydrilla from spreading between water bodies. State agencies are urging careful inspections and use of synthetic materials to protect local waterfowl habitat.  The Mining Journal
  • Michigan Trails Week is underway and visitors are using local trails like the Noquemanon Trail Network—where executive director Lori Hauswirth said fall colors draw more hikers—and the Iron Ore Heritage Trail to enjoy the season after summer's busy period. HEALTH NEWS

  • Mid Peninsula School District's volleyball team held a benefit on Thursday night—featuring a bake sale and silent auction—to raise money for Superintendent Eric VanDamme, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in July and needed help covering travel costs to Mayo Clinic.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Former Congressman Bart Stupak recalled his 25-year-old loss when his 17-year-old son died by suicide and explained how a medication issue may have contributed to the tragedy - he urged increased support for suicide loss survivors during Suicide Awareness Month.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Jennifer Buta shared her journey after losing her 17-year-old son, Jordan, to suicide in 2022 after a sextortion scam harmed him. She now honors his memory—sharing his story to help others in crisis while cherishing every moment with her young daughters.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • 11-year-old Madeline Dodd from Ishpeming, who was diagnosed with B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and is treated at Mott Children’s Hospital, was honored by Detroit Lions player Aidan Hutchinson through his Hutch's Heroes program—he gave her a crown and dedicated his game to her. Her dad said Hutchinson’s visit and actions brought joy during a hard time—her strength inspires everyone around her.  The Mining Journal
