COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local chefs are cooking a six-course beer dinner for BrewFeast — the fifth annual fundraiser for the ACF Student Initiative — at Ore Dock Brewing Co on Oct. 7. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets cost $65.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The Marquette DDA is joining a statewide event on Sept. 27 that will invite residents to walk downtown, shop locally and enjoy the social district—supporting local business and community connectivity. Michael Bradford, the agency's outreach director, said the event will help boost local shops and keep money in the community.  Upper Michigan's Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • An Acoustic Tribute to the Grateful Dead — with The Make-Believe Spurs and special guest Andy Langlois — will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 25th at Kaufman Auditorium in Marquette to raise funds for community arts programs.  Sunny 101.9
  • The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU has opened the exhibit Gales of November: Shipwrecks on Lake Superior, which will run until Dec. 20 to mark 50 years since the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking. The exhibit shows shipwreck stories and explains why Lake Superior is dangerous during November storms — it is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Ishpeming hosted its first powwow in over 22 years on Sunday at Lake Bancroft Park with over 200 attendees enjoying local vendors, indigenous dances, and a community feast+ event organizer Sarah Garver said the celebration supports her healing and gratitude for community backing.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • All four U.P. state legislators attended a summit at the Ramada Inn in Marquette on Monday to answer school administrators' questions about education funding amid concerns over a looming state government shutdown. They warned that if no budget is passed by Oct. 1, school districts may cut free lunch programs and face borrowing challenges — triggering the need for emergency loan applications.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Marquette Area Public Schools is asking residents for input on its plans to update classrooms and buildings after a statewide study showed over $100 million in needed upgrades—district leaders held the first listening session tonight and will share survey results on October 13 while considering a future bond proposal to fund larger projects.  WZMQ 19
  • Marquette County String Orchestra Society is hosting a strings refresher workshop on Nov 8 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church where instructors Igna Banitt, Janis Peterson & Wendy Larson will teach former adult string players. In-person registration with instrument evaluation is held on Oct 5 with a $25 cash fee, and participants must bring a playable instrument.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy has given over $1.85 million to eight local governments through its Renewables Ready Communities Awards—Ewing Township in Marquette County received $133,225 for a solar project by Renegade Solar expected to operate in June and Baldwin Township in Delta County will use its funds to build new pickleball and basketball courts.  WZMQ 19
  • The state budget proposes $226 million for local bus operations, marking the lowest state funding ever and raising concerns for regular transit service in the Upper Peninsula. Transit leaders warned that rising costs and staffing shortages may force cuts—reducing rides for jobs, education and healthcare.  WZMQ 19

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC reports nearly 70% of opioid overdose deaths in 2023 involved synthetic opioids—mainly fentanyl—with experts noting the shift from prescription painkillers to heroin and fentanyl. Marquette County has formed an overdose fatality review team to study local deaths and recommend ways to reduce future incidents.  Upper Michigan's Source
