COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Marquette, Ishpeming and Negaunee senior centers are asking for volunteers to join the AARP Tax-Aide Program and help prepare free tax returns for people with low to moderate incomes and those aged 60 and older. An introductory meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Oct 22 at the Citizens Forum room in Lakeview Arena with a follow-up meeting on Nov 7 (volunteers will receive training and support). - ➤ Munising veteran Jason Viau and his father, both marines, joined the 27th Upper Peninsula Honor Flight which returned from Washington, D.C. on September 19 and saw nearly 80 veterans tour war memorials+ including the WWII Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Project: Keep Kids Warm provided new winter jackets, snow pants, boots and gear for hundreds of kids in western Marquette County on September 19 as local schools and service groups submitted requests to Wesley United Methodist Church. Financial contributions helped secure bulk winter clothing purchases—ensuring families in need received discounted items. Sunny 101.9
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marquette is celebrating 150 years with an event called (1875: Peter White at St. Paul’s) starting at 4 p.m. on Sunday; local historian Jim Koski will show historic photos while actor Chip Truskin portrays Peter White, and donations will benefit the church’s restoration fund. - ➤ MARESA is hosting free online safety workshops for caregivers that will offer key tools and strategies to keep kids safe online. The elementary workshop runs Sept. 24 from 6—8 p.m. with in-house childcare while the middle and high school workshop is scheduled for Oct. 8 from 6—8 p.m. at MARESA at 321 E. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The USDA Forest Service said conditions are favorable for prescribed fire operations at the Paula Red site or the Jonathan site, and smoke may be visible along M-28 between Eckerman Corner and Raco—drone flights are not allowed near the burns. The agency said the burns will reduce wildfire risk and improve forest health. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Marquette residents can pick up to five free red or white pine trees from local businesses as part of Superior Watershed Partnership’s Forests to Faucets program—supporting clean drinking water by protecting local watersheds. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan Supreme Court will soon hear a challenge brought by Tribal Nations and environmental advocates who say the state commission broke law in approving Enbridge’s oil tunnel project beneath the Straits of Mackinac—Earthjustice reported the Canadian pipeline still needs federal and state permits for the tunnel. - ➤ A public candidate forum for those running for the Board of Light and Power and City Commission will be held on September 30 at 6:00 p.m. in Marquette’s City Commission Chambers at 300 W. Baraga St+ the forum, moderated by the League of Women Voters, will let candidates answer public questions+ preparing for the November ballots. WZMQ 19
- ➤ Northern Michigan University’s Board of Trustees approved a $137.6 million general fund base budget for fiscal year 2026 and designated four trustees to meet with NMU Foundation board members to discuss changes to the Memorandum of Understanding. The meeting will address concerns over personnel and liability—issues that surfaced after the previous foundation president was fired and an interim president was appointed. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ John DePetro resigned from the county board on Tuesday due to health issues, leaving district one vacant—he had served with long public service. The board may appoint a replacement who must run in the 2026 election, and applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the County Clerk’s Office. The Mining Journal
