COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Michigan State University brings livestock road safety training to the U.P. for the first time, with first responders and community members set to learn how to manage vehicle crashes involving animals on September 30 and October 1 at the State Fairgrounds in Escanaba. Forsyth Township Fire Department Captain Ron Lauren said the training will teach techniques to safely control animals during accidents — such as forming corral barriers for pigs, horses, and cows.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Nearly 80 U.P. veterans returned from Washington D.C. on Wednesday as part of the 27th Honor Flight, where they visited monuments and memorials that honor their service—each veteran experienced the trip in a personal way.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • The final Music on Third event capped the summer season in downtown Marquette Thursday night—featuring 18 acts performing from 6–9 with extended hours and double pay for artists. At the same time, the Marquette Fire Department hosted its Fill the Boot campaign at Third and Hewitt to raise funds for local clinics and kids’ camps that support the Muscular Dystrophy Association.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Room at the Inn in Marquette is asking for help as state and federal funds may be at risk if the state budget is not signed by October 1—sign-ins have doubled since January and the center now serves more families than last year.  Upper Michigan's Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan Works! Association honored Chris Standerford as its 2025 Volunteer of the Year for his work in boosting science, math and technology learning and job training; he will take on the role of MiSTEM Network Regional Director for the Central Upper Peninsula—guiding STEM education in several counties.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Due to the state budget not being passed, school leaders in the Upper Peninsula, including Ishpeming and Ontonagon, are preparing for possible cuts to programs like counseling and safety as they await final state aid by October 1.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Northern Michigan University cut a ribbon on Thursday for the new Weston Hall expansion that houses teaching labs, research facilities and faculty offices. The facility is designed to help the Biology Department serve more students as enrollment has grown from 250 to 670.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU held a construction management career fair at the Jacobetti Complex on Thursday where over 50 employers met with students to discuss career paths and networking opportunities — students like Cooper Morrill and Jack Drummond learned more about working for companies that support growth in the construction industry.  Upper Michigan's Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • In recent days, birders in Marquette observed thousands of migrating thrushes and recorded up to 62 species with a count of 4400 birds in one day, noting that about 50 thrushes fed at Sunset Point where a mountain ash tree offered fruit. Fall migration brought swarming ants that attracted pileated woodpeckers at Presque Isle Park — a sign that seasonal changes are well underway before winter arrives.  The Mining Journal
