COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Feeding America West Michigan held two drive-thru food distribution events for families in need on Wednesday—one at the Salvation Army in Escanaba starting at 10 a.m. and the other at the Berry Events Center on the NMU campus starting at noon.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marquette is marking 150 years by hosting a presentation on Sunday at 4 p.m.—the event will share photos and stories about Peter White, a founder of the church and the city, and will raise money for needed repairs. Jim Koski and Chip Truscon will tell the history through live storytelling at the church.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Today, the Marquette City Fire Department is hosting its Fill-the-Boot fundraiser to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association at the Cleveland and McClellan intersection from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., with additional firefighters at Music on Third Street from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. accepting coins and Venmo donations.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Northern Michigan University will hold its annual homecoming parade on Friday at 5:30 p.m.—the route begins at the NMU parking lot on Pine Street, continues along Fair, Third, Hewitt and Front Streets, and is escorted by Marquette City Police who will close the streets to traffic during the event.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education is seeking community and taxpayer feedback on a bond proposal to fund a $60 million base plan for critical facility repairs—addressing outdated building systems and infrastructure needs. Two information sessions will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23 at Marquette Senior High School Little Theatre, and the survey will be open for responses until Oct. 3.  The Mining Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Marquette County Road Commission said they completed several major summer projects, including building a culvert at Tilden Mine in Ishpeming, and they will continue brushing and reestablishing roads until snow falls—staff work to keep travel safe. Director Ross Olsen confirmed that the ongoing work is critical to preparing for winter conditions.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • Today in Marquette, the County Transit Authority is asking both riders and non-riders to complete an anonymous survey (which takes about two minutes) to help improve Marq-Tran services and communication across the county.  The Mining Journal
  • North Third Street is closed to traffic between Arch Street and Kaye Avenue from 5:30-9 p.m. today (for Marquette Downtown Development Authority’s Music on Third event) and detour routes are provided (by local officials).  The Mining Journal
  • Johnny DePetro, who served 11 years on the Marquette County Board and as mayor, resigned today and retired from public service—Board Chair Joe Derocha wished him and his wife the best.  Upper Michigan's Source

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On September 17, Beacon House completed a land swap with Habitat for Humanity that exchanged one acre of underused parking from Upper Peninsula Medical Center for a neighboring parcel—this deal will let Beacon House expand its services and enable Habitat to build more affordable homes.  Sunny 101.9

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Marji Gesick 50-mile mountain bike race will start on Lakeshore Boulevard between Washington and Spring streets. Riders will follow a route using the city path, Lake Street, Cliffs Power Road, and Mount Marquette Road while Lakeshore Boulevard is closed from 6—8:30 a.m. with police directing detours.  The Mining Journal
  • Producers of the film Northern Boys are raising funds now as they plan to film in Marquette to tell the story of the 1975 NMU championship team—interviews with original players will be held during the October 9th–11th reunion and additional scenes with students will be shot in January or February.
