- ➤ Marquette Board of Light and Power said that 2,236 homes and businesses lost power Monday morning — about 6.35% of the 35,209 customers tracked in the county. The utility said it was working to fix the outage but had not yet determined the cause. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Fresh Coast Beauty held a free Cuts for a Cause event at Texas Roadhouse in Marquette Township on Tuesday—people donated at least 8 inches of hair to support Children With Hair Loss and help kids with medically caused hair loss, while diners added 10% of their bill to the cause. - ➤ Room at the Inn is hosting a public board meeting on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Peter White Public Library Community Room to present its 2024 impact report and gather community feedback on housing—input that may help improve its services. Upper Michigan's Source

- ➤ Michigan State Police launched the Opening the Door Internet safety campaign today to help parents and children guard against online dangers — Marquette County Sheriff Greg Zyburt warned that up to 50,000 predators work online and the campaign offers resources and a reporting tool for added protection. - ➤ Arts supporters in Upper Michigan are voicing concerns as the proposed state budget would cut $11M in arts grants by zeroing out funding for MACC — local groups like Bonifas Arts Center have begun discussing the impact while Representative Prestin noted that local fundraising methods may help make up the loss. - ➤ The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education is asking residents for input on building updates after a state study found over $100 million in critical needs. The board will host community information sessions on Monday, September 22 and Tuesday, September 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Little Theatre at Marquette Senior High School—residents will also receive a survey this month. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ John D. Mangum was a local businessman and politician who served as mayor and postmaster and worked in the timber business and political campaigns. He faced heavy legal fights and personal struggles and died in New York just before Christmas—leaving a lasting mark on Marquette history. The Mining Journal
- ➤ Captain Darren Green of the Michigan State Police is retiring after 25 years of work. He led field services in the Eighth District—from 15 counties over 16,000 square miles—since August 2023. Upper Michigan's Source
- ➤ On Tuesday, the Marquette County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a trail easement on Cleveland-Cliffs land, ensuring the Ramba Trail System stays connected for biking, snowmobile riding, and more. Board Chair Joe Derocha said the decision protects the trails from being segmented if the property is later sold — county officials will now create a legal trail alignment map. - ➤ The 906 Adventure Team has kept registration open for the Crusher race until Sept 30 while preparing for the Marji Gesick survival event scheduled for Sept 20. Director Todd Poquette said the Crusher race, which hosted about 750 riders this year, supports youth programs and noted Marji Gesick challenges riders with extra mileage added to each course — making it one of the toughest mountain bike races.
