COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, families with their dogs walked 1.5 miles along Marquette's walkways as UPAWS celebrated its 20th annual Strut Your Mutt fundraiser—participants joined a costume contest and raised funds to care for homeless animals.   • The West Branch Township car show drew unique automobiles from near and far on Saturday as the township held its second annual fundraiser to build new recreational spaces—such as a soccer field, baseball field, and disc golf course. Organizers said the event featured live music and raffle activities and attracted cars from locations like Birch Run and Houghton.  Upper Michigan's Source

  • Peter White Public Library now offers new thriller selections—featuring stories that mix old legends with modern twists and mysterious characters to keep local readers engaged. The library’s collection gives fans a fresh look at suspenseful novels from authors like Sarah Penner and Freida McFadden.  The Mining Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Saturday afternoon, Carrie Pearson visited Peter White Public Library to launch her sixth book, Watch Them Grow, which explains how 12 animals develop before birth (including bat wings and mouse whiskers).   • Last night, Detroit Red Wings legends and Yoopers United played at NMU's Barry Events Center for the third annual Marquette County Hockey Night—a fundraiser for United Way of Marquette County—where players like forward Neeco Belanger and former NHL alum Justin Florek took part as Yoopers United looked for a big win.  Upper Michigan's Source
  • NMU volleyball lost to Duluth on Saturday afternoon in straight sets 22-25, 22-25, 23-25. Freshman Kaylie McIntosh led the Wildcats with 15 kills while Taylor Smaka served five aces—causing NMU to fall to a 1-7 record as Duluth remains undefeated.  WZMQ 19
  • Michigan Tech Football moved to 3-0 after it beat Hillsdale 34-21 at Frank 'Muddy' Waters Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with quarterback Alex Bueno throwing for 364 yards and three touchdowns while the defense held strong.  WZMQ 19
  • On September 12, NMU volleyball lost two straight-set matches in Minnesota — falling to 1-6 after losing to Adelphi and No. 10 St. Cloud State. The Wildcats showed strong effort with Lauren Cardwell’s career-high 15 digs and McKenzie Gruner’s 15 kills before they played their next match at Minnesota Duluth on September 13.  WZMQ 19
  • The NMU women's soccer team ended its non-conference schedule with a scoreless draw against Cedarville on September 13th—goalkeeper Jillian Thompson made five saves for a clean sheet while the Wildcats held strong control in the match. They will next travel to Roosevelt and Parkside next weekend for GLIAC play.  WZMQ 19
  • The Wildcats fell to the Tommies 20–7 after two late scores ruined their 7–6 lead in a historic Division I game at the Superior Dome—NMU lost its third game and will host the Davenport Panthers for Homecoming on Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m.  WZMQ 19
